Orlando Pirates have officially confirmed the departure of rising star Mohau Nkota, who is set to join Al-Ettifaq FC in the Saudi Pro League. The 21-year-old winger is on his way to the Middle East after a standout debut season with the Buccaneers.
Nkota’s move marks a major milestone in his young career, having risen rapidly through the ranks at Pirates to become a first-team regular. He featured in 39 matches across all competitions last season, delivering a string of impressive performances and making vital contributions in front of goal.
In an official club statement, Orlando Pirates revealed that an agreement had been reached with Al-Ettifaq for a permanent transfer, pending the completion of personal terms and a medical. The Soweto giants expressed pride in Nkota’s development and wished him well as he embarks on this next chapter.
“We are extremely proud of Mohau’s growth and professionalism during his time with us. He has all the tools to succeed abroad, and we’re confident this move will benefit his career tremendously,” the club said.
Nkota, who has also earned national team recognition with Bafana Bafana, admitted that leaving Pirates wasn’t easy.
“This club means everything to me. I grew up here, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities I was given. But I’m excited for this new challenge. It’s a big step for my growth, and I’m ready for it,” he said.
The move will see Nkota link up with a competitive Al-Ettifaq side that finished 7th in the Saudi Pro League last season. The team is currently coached by Saad Al-Shehri and features experienced internationals such as Gini Wijnaldum, providing the perfect environment for the young South African to continue his development.
In a strategic move, Orlando Pirates are understood to have secured a first-option clause, allowing them the opportunity to re-sign Nkota in the future should circumstances allow.
Nkota becomes one of the youngest South African players to join the Saudi Pro League, following in the footsteps of several PSL stars who have ventured abroad in search of new horizons.
