Eric Tinkler Appointed Durban City FC Head Coach as Club Targets Top-Eight Finish

Betway Premiership

Durban City FC have officially appointed experienced South African coach Eric Tinkler as their new head coach, with the former Bafana Bafana midfielder returning to the Betway Premiership with a clear mandate to build on the club’s recent progress.

The appointment was confirmed by Durban City on Thursday, 8 October 2026, following the club’s decision to part ways with former head coach Khalil Ben Youssef. Tinkler now takes charge at an important stage of the season, with the club competing domestically and in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner arrives with extensive experience in South African football. His previous coaching positions include Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City, SuperSport United, Chippa United, Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United. He most recently worked in Ghana with Asante Kotoko before leaving the club in September after requesting to be released from his contract for personal reasons.

A familiar relationship with Farook Kadodia

Tinkler’s return to KwaZulu-Natal also brings him back together with Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia.

The pair previously worked together at Maritzburg United, the club that later became Durban City. During Tinkler’s time at Maritzburg, he guided the side to the 2019 Telkom Knockout final.

That previous relationship played a role in Tinkler’s decision to accept the Durban City opportunity.

The coach said the chance to work with Kadodia again was an important factor, while also pointing to the ambition being shown by the club.

Durban City have made significant progress since returning to the top flight and are already competing in continental football through the CAF Confederation Cup. Tinkler said that ambition made the opportunity attractive to him.

Tinkler wants continuity rather than major changes

One of the most significant aspects of Tinkler’s arrival is his intention to avoid making unnecessary changes to a squad that enjoyed a successful 2025/26 campaign.

Rather than immediately attempting to rebuild the team, the new coach has indicated that he wants to work with the foundations already established at the club.

His immediate priorities include giving players opportunities, restoring winning momentum and maintaining Durban City’s competitiveness across several competitions.

Tinkler has set a target of finishing inside the Betway Premiership top eight, while also aiming to take Durban City as far as possible in the CAF Confederation Cup and compete strongly in the Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup.

That creates a demanding schedule for the new coach, particularly because Durban City are balancing domestic fixtures with their continental campaign.

The challenge waiting for Tinkler

Tinkler takes over from Ben Youssef after Durban City’s opening seven Betway Premiership matches produced one victory, four draws and two defeats. Ben Youssef did, however, oversee the club’s progress into the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The new coach therefore inherits a team that has already demonstrated its ability to compete but will need to turn more of its performances into victories in the league.

His experience of managing in the Betway Premiership could be particularly valuable as Durban City look to establish themselves among South Africa’s top-flight clubs.

His previous work with Orlando Pirates, Cape Town City and SuperSport United means he has operated in environments where expectations are high and results are closely scrutinised.

From Ghana back to South Africa

Tinkler’s appointment comes only days after the end of his brief spell at Asante Kotoko.

He joined the Ghanaian giants in July 2026 but left in September after asking to be released from his contract for personal reasons. During his four Ghana Premier League matches in charge, Kotoko recorded one victory, two draws and one defeat. He also won the 2026 Democracy Cup with the club after a penalty-shootout victory over Hearts of Oak.

His return to South Africa gives him an opportunity to immediately resume his domestic coaching career while also taking charge of a club involved in African competition.

First assignment is a KZN derby

Tinkler will not have to wait long for his first opportunity to influence results.

His first match as Durban City head coach will be a KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu on 13 October 2026 at Chatsworth Stadium, according to the club’s official announcement.

The fixture provides an immediate test for Tinkler as he begins working with a squad that has already experienced a change in leadership during the opening stages of the campaign.

For Durban City, the appointment represents another important step in the club’s development. For Tinkler, it is an opportunity to build a new chapter in South Africa after a short spell abroad.

With the Betway Premiership, CAF Confederation Cup and domestic cup competitions still ahead, the new Durban City coach has no shortage of challenges or opportunities.

The next chapter begins with a derby.
