Neo Bohloko delivered a performance to remember on Sunday as Kaizer Chiefs defeated Orlando Pirates 3-2 in a thrilling DStv Diski Challenge Soweto Derby at Princess Magogo Stadium.
If there was one player who stood out in the yellow and black, it was the Chiefs captain.
Bohloko was cooking.
The young forward scored twice as Amakhosi raced into a commanding lead before eventually holding on for a dramatic victory over the reigning DDC champions.
Bohloko takes centre stage
The match was still relatively cagey in the opening stages, but Bohloko changed the game in the 28th minute.
After Orlando Pirates defender Tristan O’Malley made a mistake, Bohloko reacted quickly before unleashing a long-range effort that sailed over goalkeeper Viwe Fetsha and into the back of the net.
It was a moment that showed both his awareness and confidence.
And he wasn’t finished.
Just six minutes later, Bohloko found the back of the net again to give Chiefs a 2-0 advantage.
Two goals in six minutes had completely shifted the momentum of the Soweto Derby.
For a young player wearing the captain’s armband in a fixture of this magnitude, it was an impressive response.
Two goals and a captain’s performance
Bohloko’s contribution wasn’t simply about getting on the scoresheet.
He led the Chiefs attack with confidence and gave the Pirates defence plenty to think about throughout the first half.
His second goal put Chiefs firmly in control, before Samkelo Msimango added a third in the 39th minute.
At that stage, Amakhosi had built a 3-0 lead and looked firmly in command.
For Bohloko, however, the biggest takeaway was his ability to make the difference when his team needed someone to step up.
Pirates fight back
Orlando Pirates refused to disappear from the contest.
Siyabonga Ngwenya pulled one goal back with a well-struck volley before Lwandle Nzimande converted a penalty to make it 3-2.
The Buccaneers then pushed for an equaliser and put Chiefs under considerable pressure in the closing stages.
Chiefs were also reduced to 10 men when Emile Dortley was sent off in the 90th minute, making the final moments even more nervy.
Despite the pressure, Chiefs held on.
A performance Chiefs supporters will remember
For Kaizer Chiefs, the result provides an important opening victory in the 2026/27 DDC campaign.
For Bohloko, it was an afternoon that put his name firmly in the spotlight.
Two goals against Orlando Pirates in a Soweto Derby is already a memorable achievement, but doing it while wearing the captain’s armband adds another layer to the performance.
The DDC remains an important platform for young South African footballers looking to develop and push towards senior football.
Performances like this are exactly what attract attention.
Neo Bohloko didn’t just score twice. He stepped up when the occasion demanded it.
And on a day when Chiefs walked away with bragging rights, the young captain was one of the biggest reasons why.
