The 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship delivered another compelling weekend of football as Matchday 5 produced important results at both ends of the table.
The weekend of 18–20 September 2026 saw Magesi FC surrender their perfect record after being held to a 1–1 draw by Hungry Lions FC, while Real Native FC strengthened their position among the early promotion contenders with a convincing victory over Venda FC.
With five rounds completed, Magesi remain at the top of the standings, but the gap at the summit has narrowed.
Magesi FC Held by Hungry Lions
Magesi FC’s perfect start to the campaign came to an end on Sunday when they were held to a 1–1 draw by Hungry Lions FC at Seshego Stadium.
The home side took the lead in the first half through an own goal as Magesi looked on course to maintain their winning run.
Hungry Lions, however, responded strongly after the interval and found the equaliser to secure a valuable point on the road.
The draw means Magesi have now dropped their first points of the season, although they remain top of the standings with 13 points from five matches.
For Hungry Lions, the result represents an important away point against one of the division’s early pace-setters.
Real Native FC Make Their Move
Real Native FC began the weekend in impressive fashion, securing a 2–0 victory over Venda FC on Friday.
Lelethu Skelem and Lungelo Dondolo were on target as Real Native produced a controlled performance to collect all three points.
The victory moved Real Native to 12 points, leaving them just one point behind Magesi at the top of the standings.
Venda, meanwhile, remain under pressure after another difficult result in the early stages of the campaign.
Earlier on Friday, Highbury FC and Gomora United played to a goalless draw, with neither side able to find the breakthrough.
Six-Goal Thriller in Upington
Saturday produced one of the weekend’s most entertaining encounters as Upington City and University of Pretoria shared six goals in a dramatic 3–3 draw at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.
Upington City made a strong start and looked set to take control of the contest, but University of Pretoria fought their way back into the match.
The two sides continued to trade goals before eventually settling for a point apiece in a thrilling encounter.
Hope FC Return to Winning Ways
Hope FC responded to recent setbacks with a narrow 1–0 victory over Orbit College.
Manelisi Ralasi scored the decisive goal to hand Hope an important three points and provide a timely boost to their campaign.
The result moves Hope onto nine points after five matches.
Leicesterford Continue Strong Start
Leicesterford City FC maintained their impressive beginning to the season with a 1–0 victory over Midlands Wanderers.
The narrow win gave Leicesterford another three points and kept them firmly among the teams competing near the top of the standings.
With 10 points from five matches, they remain within touching distance of the leading pair.
The Bees FC Secure First Win
At the other end of the standings, The Bees FC finally celebrated their first victory of the campaign after edging Lerumo Lions 1–0.
The result could prove significant in the relegation battle, giving The Bees a much-needed boost while moving them above Venda FC and Orbit College.
For Lerumo Lions, the defeat adds further pressure as the season progresses.
NWU and Cape Town City Share the Points
North West University and Cape Town City played to a 0–0 draw, with both sides having to settle for a single point.
NWU’s defensive organisation helped keep the visitors at bay, while Cape Town City were unable to find a way through despite their efforts to break the deadlock.
