León Heroics Fire Sundowns into Back-to-Back CAF Champions League Finals

International Football

PRETORIA – Mamelodi Sundowns have once again stamped their authority on the African stage, booking a place in the CAF Champions League final for the second year in a row.

A composed and clinical 1-0 victory over Tunisian heavyweights Espérance Sportive de Tunis at a vibrant Loftus Versfeld Stadium sealed a 2-0 aggregate triumph, sending Masandawana into their fourth final in Africa’s premier club competition.

León Delivers on the Big Stage

The story of this semi-final belonged to Colombian forward Brayan León. After netting the decisive goal in Tunis, he once again rose to the occasion when it mattered most.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute, born out of relentless pressing. León forced an error from Esperance goalkeeper Béchir Ben Saïd, winning a penalty after a rushed challenge inside the box.

Although Ben Saïd guessed correctly to save the initial spot-kick, León reacted in a flash, pouncing on the rebound and smashing home to ignite the crowd and hand Sundowns a lead they would not surrender.

Composure Meets Resistance

To their credit, Esperance showed flashes of danger. Just before halftime, Yan Sasse delivered a teasing ball that deflected off Florian Danho and crashed against the crossbar, offering a reminder of the threat posed by the visitors.

But the second half belonged to Sundowns’ discipline and structure. Under the guidance of Miguel Cardoso, the hosts controlled the tempo with authority. A resolute backline, led by Khulumani Ndamane in the absence of Grant Kekana, combined with the assured presence of Ronwen Williams in goal, ensured the Brazilians closed out the contest with maturity.

History Within Reach

This result is more than just progression, it is a powerful statement of consistency and ambition. Since lifting the title in 2016, Sundowns have steadily built a continental legacy. After falling short in the 2025 final against Pyramids FC, they now have a chance at redemption.

Reaching consecutive finals marks a historic first for a South African club, underlining Sundowns’ status as one of Africa’s elite.
