DURBAN — Orlando Pirates sent a powerful message in the Betway Premiership on Sunday afternoon, bouncing back to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United at the iconic Hollywoodbets Kings Park Stadium.
After a disappointing midweek draw against AmaZulu at the same venue, the Buccaneers entered the clash under pressure to respond. While the first half proved challenging against a stubborn Chippa defence, Pirates found another gear after the break, producing a clinical attacking display to secure all three points.
Chippa’s Defensive Wall Frustrates Pirates
The opening 45 minutes was a tactical battle, with Chippa United sitting deep and frustrating Orlando Pirates’ attacking rhythm.
The Buccaneers enjoyed more possession and pushed forward in search of an early breakthrough, but clear opportunities were difficult to create. Oswin Appollis came closest in the early stages, forcing a save from Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, while Deon Hotto nearly broke the deadlock with a dangerous curling free-kick that was brilliantly tipped over the crossbar.

In the 59th minute, Patrick Maswanganyi produced a moment of brilliance, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Gamphani Lungu, who showed composure to fire past Nwabali from a tight angle and give Pirates the lead.

Just four minutes later, Pirates doubled their advantage. Hotto once again became the creator, delivering a pinpoint corner kick into the box where defender Lebone Seema rose above the defence and powered a header into the bottom corner to score his first goal of the campaign.

Despite trailing by two goals, Chippa United refused to surrender and pushed forward in search of a comeback.
The Eastern Cape side nearly found a way back into the contest when Bandile Dlamini unleashed a powerful free-kick, but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine produced a spectacular diving save to deny him and protect the Buccaneers’ clean sheet.
Msendami Puts the Result Beyond Doubt
Orlando Pirates continued to press until the final whistle, and their persistence paid off in the closing stages.
In the 87th minute, substitute Daniel Msendami took full advantage of a defensive mistake, racing through on goal before calmly finishing past Nwabali to score his first goal for the club and complete a memorable 3-0 victory.
Pirates Back Among the Early Pace-Setters
The emphatic win lifts Orlando Pirates back into the upper positions of the Betway Premiership standings and provides coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with plenty of positives as the season continues.
