Orlando Pirates Storm Back to the Summit with Commanding Win Over AmaZulu

Betway Premiership

SOWETO, SOUTH AFRICA – Orlando Pirates delivered a statement performance on Saturday afternoon, dismantling AmaZulu FC 3-0 at the iconic Orlando Stadium to reclaim top spot in the Betway Premiership.

The Buccaneers responded emphatically after their previous stumble, showing composure, sharp attacking intent, and defensive discipline to leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns in the title race.

Mbuthuma Sparks a Ruthless First Half

Pirates wasted no time asserting control, pressing high and dictating tempo from the opening whistle. Their early dominance paid off in the 13th minute, when Yamela Mbuthuma rose highest to power home a header, silencing doubts around his recent form.

AmaZulu looked to respond through Wandile Dube, who showed flashes of danger down the flank, but the Pirates’ backline, marshalled by Nkosikhona Ndaba, stood firm and denied clear opportunities.

Just before the break, Pirates delivered a decisive second blow. In the 45th minute, Oswin Appollis produced a moment of brilliance, striking a low, skidding effort from range that beat Olwethu Mzimela to double the lead and cap a dominant first-half display.

Pirates Maintain Control as Ratomo Finishes the Job

Any hopes of an AmaZulu comeback were quickly shut down after halftime. Despite tactical changes and fresh legs introduced by the visitors, Pirates remained in full control.

A slick attacking move in the 58th minute, involving Relebohile Mofokeng and Ndaba, sliced through the AmaZulu defence before Relebohile Mofokeng calmly slotted home the third goal, effectively sealing the result.

Pirates’ game management stood out, as they controlled possession, limited AmaZulu’s chances, and maintained their attacking threat throughout.

Missed Chances but Mission Accomplished

The scoreline could have been even more emphatic. Pirates were awarded a late penalty after a handball by Tariq Fielies, but Mofokeng’s effort crashed against the crossbar.

Mzimela produced a series of late saves to deny further goals, keeping the scoreline respectable as Pirates saw out the match with authority.
