Kaizer Chiefs maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season after playing out a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The fixture, relocated to the Mpumalanga venue, produced a physical and closely contested battle, with both sides showing periods of attacking intent. However, disciplined defending, missed opportunities and decisive goalkeeping ensured that neither team could find the breakthrough.
Mbanjwa Denies Chiefs from the Spot
Kaizer Chiefs started with greater attacking purpose as Fernando da Cruz’s side looked to return to winning ways following their draw against Polokwane City.
The visitors attempted to stretch the Golden Arrows defence through the pace and width of Pule Mmodi and Mfundo Vilakazi, while Golden Arrows remained compact and looked to exploit spaces on the counter.
The biggest opportunity of the first half arrived in the 31st minute when Chiefs were awarded a penalty after Faiz Abrahams was fouled inside the Golden Arrows penalty area.
Lebohang Maboe took responsibility from the spot, but Golden Arrows goalkeeper Thalasani Mbanjwa produced an excellent save to deny the midfielder and preserve the deadlock.
The penalty miss gave Abafana Bes’thende renewed confidence, while the intensity of the contest increased as both midfields battled for control.
A series of challenges and tactical fouls resulted in several yellow cards before the interval, underlining the physical nature of the encounter.
Chiefs Push for a Breakthrough
Both technical teams looked to their benches for inspiration after the restart as the game became increasingly stretched.
Chiefs introduced Mduduzi Shabalala and Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko as they sought to inject more creativity and attacking urgency into their play.
Golden Arrows, however, remained organised defensively. Their backline, marshalled by Osborn Maluleke, consistently closed down passing channels and limited Chiefs’ opportunities in dangerous areas.
As the match entered its final stages, Chiefs increased the pressure and looked for a late winner.
Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro was also introduced as Amakhosi continued searching for the decisive moment, but Golden Arrows remained resolute and successfully dealt with the late pressure.
Despite a tense finish and several tactical fouls disrupting the rhythm of the game, neither side could produce the finishing touch required to claim all three points.
Points Shared in Mbombela
The final whistle confirmed a 0–0 draw, with both teams taking a point from an evenly contested encounter.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the result extends their unbeaten start to the league campaign. However, the missed penalty will leave Amakhosi reflecting on what might have been, particularly given the limited number of clear chances created after the interval.
For Golden Arrows, the result represents a valuable point against one of the league’s established sides. Mbanjwa’s penalty save proved particularly important in helping Abafana Bes’thende secure a share of the spoils.
