POLOKWANE, SOUTH AFRICA – A historic night unfolded at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening as Sipho Chaine etched his name into Betway Premiership history. The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper officially became the league’s all-time single-season clean sheet record holder after registering his 19th shutout during Pirates’ commanding 3-0 victory over Magesi FC.
The achievement sees Chaine surpass the previous benchmark of 18 clean sheets set by Ronwen Williams during the 2022/23 campaign with Mamelodi Sundowns. With two league matches still remaining, the Pirates number one now has the opportunity to extend the record even further.
Chaine’s Remarkable Season
The 29-year-old has been one of the standout performers in South African football this season, producing consistent displays that have played a crucial role in keeping Pirates firmly in the title conversation.
Under the guidance of coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates have built one of the most disciplined defensive units in the league, with Chaine serving as the foundation. Across 28 league appearances, he has conceded just 12 goals while repeatedly delivering match-winning saves in key moments throughout the campaign.
His composure, command of the penalty area, and leadership at the back have transformed him into one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the country.
Buccaneers Dominate in Polokwane
While Chaine made history between the posts, Pirates’ attacking players ensured the evening ended in comfortable fashion for the Soweto giants.
Patrick Maswanganyi opened the scoring early in the first half after reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the box, giving the visitors immediate control of the contest.
The pressure continued moments later when Kamogelo Sebelebele doubled the advantage with a composed finish after capitalising on a rebound.
Pirates remained dominant throughout the second half, and Oswin Appollis eventually sealed the victory from the penalty spot after Sebelebele was brought down inside the area.
Magesi struggled to create meaningful opportunities for most of the encounter, with Chaine enjoying a relatively quiet evening as his defence comfortably dealt with the home side’s attacking efforts.
Bafana Bafana Recognition Growing Louder
Following another standout performance, calls for Chaine to receive greater recognition at international level continue to grow stronger.
With consistency becoming one of his biggest strengths, many supporters now believe the Pirates goalkeeper has firmly placed himself in contention for future Bafana Bafana selections ahead of upcoming international fixtures and World Cup qualifying matches.
Pressure Remains on Sundowns
The victory keeps Orlando Pirates firmly in the Betway Premiership title race as the campaign heads toward a dramatic conclusion.
With the Buccaneers continuing to chase Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the standings, Chaine’s record-breaking campaign could still become even more memorable should Pirates finish the season with silverware.
For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Sipho Chaine, the man who has officially rewritten the PSL record books.
