Rangers FC have officially completed the signing of highly-rated South African defender Olwethu Makhanya from Major League Soccer outfit Philadelphia Union, marking a major milestone in the young centre-back’s career.
The 22-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Glasgow giants, with an option to extend the deal by a further year, subject to international clearance. The transfer is reportedly valued at around £3 million ($4.5 million / R75 million), making Makhanya the club’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window.
Rising From Stellenbosch to the Global Stage
Makhanya’s journey to European football has been nothing short of remarkable. The defender first made his name in South Africa with Stellenbosch FC, where his impressive performances earned him recognition as one of the country’s brightest young talents.
During his time with Stellenbosch, Makhanya received a nomination for the Young Footballer of the Year award and claimed the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award, highlighting his rapid rise in the domestic game.
His potential soon attracted international attention, and in 2023 he made history by becoming Philadelphia Union’s first U22 Initiative signing, beginning a new chapter in Major League Soccer.
Over three seasons in the United States, Makhanya developed into a commanding defensive presence, making 42 league appearances and playing a key role as Philadelphia Union secured the 2025 Supporters’ Shield.
His outstanding club form also earned recognition at international level, with the defender receiving a senior call-up to Bafana Bafana and being included in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Dream Move to Ibrox
After completing his move to Rangers, Makhanya spoke with excitement about achieving a lifelong ambition of playing European football.
“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now. It is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”
Rangers believe they have secured a defender with the perfect combination of athletic ability, tactical intelligence, and international experience. The club sees Makhanya as an important addition to their defensive department as they prepare for another demanding campaign.
With his MLS chapter now complete, Makhanya turns his attention to the challenges of the Scottish Premiership, where he will compete for a regular starting role and continue his development on one of European football’s biggest stages.
