LAFC and veteran French striker Olivier Giroud have officially parted ways, just over a year after his high-profile arrival in Major League Soccer. The club confirmed the mutual termination of his contract on Friday, with Giroud set to play his final match for the Black and Gold this Sunday, June 29, against Vancouver Whitecaps at BMO Stadium.
Giroud, 38, joined LAFC in May 2024 following the end of his contract with AC Milan. His time in Los Angeles saw flashes of brilliance and key contributions, most notably helping the club clinch the 2024 U.S. Open Cup. He scored five goals in 37 appearances across all competitions, including memorable strikes in both the Leagues Cup and U.S. Open Cup finals.
Despite his leadership and decorated experience, Giroud found it challenging to maintain consistent form in the fast-paced MLS environment. According to club officials, the decision to part ways was made amicably to allow both sides to move forward with their respective ambitions.
“Olivier brought a winning mentality and immense professionalism during his time with us,” said LAFC Co-President and GM John Thorrington. “We thank him for everything he’s contributed on and off the pitch.”
Giroud also expressed gratitude to the club and its supporters, stating:
“It’s been a great experience for me and my family in Los Angeles. I’m thankful for the opportunity and proud of the memories we’ve made here.”
Reliable sources have confirmed that Giroud is now expected to return to France, where he is in advanced talks to join Ligue 1 side Lille on a two-year deal. The move would mark his return to French football for the first time in over a decade.
With Giroud’s departure, LAFC now has an open Designated Player slot, which could pave the way for a new marquee signing ahead of the league’s summer transfer window.
