Mamelodi Sundowns have officially confirmed the acquisition of experienced midfielder Thabo Cele following his departure from Kaizer Chiefs, adding further quality and depth to their squad ahead of a demanding season.
The 29-year-old midfielder joins the Brazilians as one of the latest additions to a squad aiming to compete strongly across domestic competitions and the CAF Champions League.
Sundowns Strengthen Midfield Options
Cele arrives at Chloorkop as a free agent after his contract with Kaizer Chiefs was terminated by mutual consent.
His arrival provides head coach Miguel Cardoso with another technically gifted option in the middle of the park as Sundowns look to manage the demands of a packed fixture schedule.
The technical team has been focused on adding more depth and experience to the midfield department, easing the workload on key figures such as Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende.
Known for his composure on the ball, passing ability, and tactical awareness, Cele brings a different dimension to Sundowns’ midfield options as they continue their pursuit of success on multiple fronts.
European Experience and Domestic Success
Cele returns to the top level of South African football with valuable international experience after spending close to a decade abroad, representing clubs in Portugal, Poland, and Russia.
The midfielder returned home in January 2025 to join Kaizer Chiefs, where he became an important member of the squad. During his time at Naturena, Cele made 38 appearances and played a significant role in helping the Glamour Boys lift the 2024/25 Nedbank Cup.
His move to Chloorkop sees him become one of the few players to make a direct switch between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, two of the biggest clubs in South African football.
Brazilians Continue Squad Strengthening
Cele’s arrival is another statement of intent from Sundowns as they continue to build a squad capable of competing across all competitions.
The club has also secured the services of former Orlando Pirates right-back Deano van Rooyen, further increasing their options as they prepare for another challenging campaign.
With Cele now officially part of the Sundowns setup, the midfielder will be eager to make his mark and contribute to the club’s ambitions of continued domestic dominance and continental success.
