Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund Draw 0-0 in FIFA Club World Cup Opener

East Rutherford, New Jersey – June 17, 2025

Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund played to a goalless draw in their opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Group F at MetLife Stadium. The match was characterized by strong defensive performances and missed opportunities, with both teams failing to break the deadlock.

Fluminense dominated possession, creating several clear-cut chances, particularly in the second half. However, they were unable to convert these opportunities into goals. Fluminense’s goalkeeper, Fábio, was largely untested, as Dortmund struggled to create significant attacking threats.

Dortmund’s goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, was the standout performer for his team, making crucial saves to keep the score level. Despite the presence of new signing Jobe Bellingham, who came on in the second half, Dortmund failed to generate significant offensive pressure. The team was criticized for its lackluster performance, with both Kobel and defender Niklas Süle expressing dissatisfaction with the team’s display.

The match was played in front of a sparse crowd, with only 34,736 spectators in the 82,500-seat stadium. The low attendance reflected the limited local interest in the tournament, which is being held in the United States for the first time.

Both teams will look to improve in their upcoming matches. Dortmund faces Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan Hyundai in their remaining group fixtures, while Fluminense will aim to build on their performance against the German side.
