Mamelodi Sundowns Eliminated from FIFA Club World Cup After Stalemate with Fluminense

Club World Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns’ hopes of progressing in the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup came to an end on Wednesday evening following a goalless draw against Brazilian giants Fluminense at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

The South African champions entered the final Group F encounter needing a victory to secure a place in the knockout stages. Despite a spirited and disciplined performance, Sundowns were unable to find the breakthrough, and the 0–0 result saw them finish third in the group, with just three points from three matches.

The group was ultimately topped by Fluminense, who finished on five points, while Borussia Dortmund edged through in second with four points following their 3–2 win over Ulsan Hyundai. Sundowns, with a win over Ulsan and narrow loss to Dortmund, fell just short of progressing.

The encounter with Fluminense was a tactical battle, with both teams cautious yet determined. Sundowns showed defensive solidity and created a handful of chances, but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made key saves to keep Sundowns in the game, while the likes of Teboho Mokoena and Tashreeq Matthews tried to drive the team forward.

Sundowns leave the tournament with their heads held high after making history earlier in the competition by becoming the first African team to win a match at the expanded Club World Cup format, defeating Ulsan Hyundai 1–0 in their opening match.

Despite the early exit, the experience gained on the global stage is expected to strengthen the club’s ambitions going forward, particularly as they prepare to defend their domestic title and compete in next season’s CAF Champions League.
