Mamelodi Sundowns were forced to dig deep on Saturday evening as they rescued a dramatic 1–1 draw against Chippa United in a thrilling Betway Premiership encounter at Buffalo City Municipality Stadium.
The Chilli Boys looked set to claim a memorable victory after taking the lead late in the second half, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Antonio Van Wyk ensured the defending champions left East London with a point.
Cagey First Half
Sundowns enjoyed the majority of possession during the opening 45 minutes, patiently moving the ball around in search of an opening.
Brayan Leon provided an attacking threat for the visitors, but Chippa United remained disciplined and compact defensively. The hosts worked tirelessly to limit Sundowns’ space in the final third, ensuring the two sides went into the half-time break level at 0–0.
Kammies Puts Chippa Ahead
The match finally burst into life in the closing stages.
Chippa United broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when substitute Sirgio Kammies reacted quickest to a dangerous cutback from Khaya Mfecane.
Kammies kept his composure inside the area before unleashing a clinical right-footed finish beyond Ronwen Williams, sending the home supporters into celebration.
With Sundowns staring at a rare defeat, the visitors increased the pressure as they searched desperately for a way back into the contest.
Van Wyk Rescues Sundowns
Chippa United appeared destined to hold on for a famous victory, but Sundowns found their breakthrough deep into stoppage time.
In the fifth minute of added time, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali misjudged a high cross into the penalty area and spilled the ball under pressure.
The loose ball fell perfectly for Antonio Van Wyk, who reacted quickly and made no mistake, firing a volley into the back of the net to level the scores.
The late intervention sparked wild celebrations among the Sundowns players, while Chippa were left devastated after coming within seconds of securing all three points.
A Point That Keeps Sundowns Going
The result underlines Sundowns’ ability to fight until the final whistle, while Chippa United can take plenty of encouragement from a performance that pushed the league leaders all the way.
For the Chilli Boys, the manner of the equaliser will be particularly frustrating, but their defensive organisation and overall performance will offer plenty of positives going forward.
Sundowns, meanwhile, will know there is room for improvement after being made to work exceptionally hard for a point on the road.
With the Betway Premiership campaign gathering momentum, both sides will now turn their attention to their next fixtures as they look to build on Saturday’s hard-fought encounter.
