PRETORIA – Supporters at the Lucas Moripe Stadium were treated to one of the wildest spectacles in Betway Premiership history on Saturday evening as Mamelodi Sundowns produced a ruthless attacking display to defeat Siwelele 7-4 in a breathtaking eleven-goal thriller.
In a match filled with relentless pressure, defensive chaos, stunning finishes and dramatic momentum swings, Masandawana showcased their firepower while Siwelele earned admiration for refusing to surrender despite the overwhelming scoreline.
The victory keeps Sundowns firmly in the title conversation as they continue their pursuit of Orlando Pirates at the top of the standings.
Sundowns Run Riot Before the Break
The hosts wasted no time asserting themselves. Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring early with a superb low strike before Tashreeq Matthews doubled the advantage moments later as Sundowns sliced through the Siwelele defence with ease.
Although Ghampani Lungu briefly gave the visitors hope with a well-taken finish, Sundowns remained relentless going forward. An unfortunate own goal by Nyiko Mobbie added to Siwelele’s misery before Matthews grabbed his second of the night to continue the onslaught.
Just before halftime, Brayan León Muñiz joined the party with a composed finish to hand the Brazilians a dominant lead heading into the interval.
Siwelele Fight Back in Spirited Second Half
To their credit, Siwelele emerged from the break determined to make a contest of it. Lungu struck again early in the second half, reducing the deficit and injecting life into the encounter.
However, Sundowns’ attacking quality proved too overwhelming. León Muñiz took centre stage with two more clinical finishes to complete a brilliant hat-trick and stretch the scoreline even further.
Despite trailing heavily, Siwelele continued to attack with courage. Relebogile Mokhuoane added another goal for the visitors before Lungu completed his own memorable hat-trick from the penalty spot late in the match.
The final whistle brought an end to a chaotic and unforgettable encounter that saw both sides combine for an astonishing eleven goals.
