Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the departure of rising star Aden McCarthy, who has completed a permanent transfer to European side Sabah FK.
The 22-year-old left-footed defender has signed a lucrative three-year deal with the Azerbaijani Premier League champions, with an option for a fourth year. Reports suggest the transfer is valued at over R7 million upfront, excluding performance-related bonuses that could significantly increase the total package.
From Naturena to European Nights
McCarthy’s rapid rise highlights the strength of Kaizer Chiefs’ youth development program. After captaining the reserve team in the DStv Diski Challenge, the commanding defender enjoyed a breakthrough season with the senior squad.
Over the recent campaign, McCarthy became a mainstay in the Amakhosi backline, making 33 appearances across all competitions and scoring twice. His stellar performances helped the Glamour Boys secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership, earning qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Now, the South African U-23 international is taking the next step in his career, moving to Europe with the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, thanks to Sabah FK’s recent league triumph.
Flying the Amakhosi Flag in Europe
Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. expressed pride in seeing an academy graduate take this big step.
“We can confirm that we have agreed to release Aden after being approached by Sabah FK. We are proud that he will compete in the qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League. Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe. We are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”
Carving Out His Own Legacy
Football runs in the McCarthy bloodline. Aden is the son of former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy. Their combined legacy made them only the fifth father-and-son duo to represent the Soweto giants at the senior level.
With his move to Baku, Azerbaijan, Aden is now writing his own chapter. His ability to operate both as a center-back and left-back makes him a key asset for Sabah FK as they aim to defend domestic glory and make their mark in Europe.
