Cape Town City Football Club has officially been relegated from the Betway Premiership after suffering a 1-0 loss to Orbit College in a decisive playoff clash on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, at Olympia Park.
The Citizens came into the match needing a win to keep their top-flight status alive, but a second-half goal from Orbit College forward Letsie Koapeng sealed their fate. The result propelled Orbit to the top of the mini-league table with eight points, securing their historic promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
Having finished 15th in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership, Cape Town City was forced into the promotion/relegation playoffs alongside Casric Stars and Orbit College. Despite being considered favourites to survive, City failed to win any of their fixtures, drawing twice and losing once.
This relegation ends Cape Town City’s uninterrupted stay in South Africa’s top-flight division since their establishment in 2016. The demotion also marks a major setback for football in the Western Cape, which now has no team represented in the Betway Premiership for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
Orbit College, on the other hand, have completed a remarkable rise through the football pyramid, securing a place in the country’s elite division for the first time in the club’s history.
Cape Town City FC will now turn their attention to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where they’ll aim for an immediate return to the top flight. Significant changes are expected within the club as they prepare for life in the second tier.
