Orlando Pirates produced a clinical second-half performance to secure a 2-0 victory over Durban City FC in their Betway Premiership encounter at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Thursday night.
The Buccaneers were made to work for the three points after a tightly contested opening half, but goals from Lebone Seema and Tshepang Moremi after the break ensured Pirates walked away with another important league victory.
Pirates Frustrated in Tactical First Half
The opening 45 minutes was a competitive affair, with both teams showing intensity and discipline as they battled for control.
Durban City arrived with a clear plan to frustrate the hosts and looked dangerous when opportunities presented themselves. Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine was called upon on several occasions, producing important saves to keep out efforts from Tylo Sanger and Jean Lwamba.
The visitors also picked up several yellow cards as they attempted to disrupt Pirates’ attacking rhythm.
Jean Lubumba, Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Kyle Jurgens were all cautioned before the interval as the physical battle continued.
Neither side could find the breakthrough, sending the teams into half-time level at 0-0.
Seema Breaks the Deadlock
Pirates returned from the interval with greater attacking intent, with Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side applying increased pressure on the Durban City defence.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 57th minute.
Defender Lebone Seema reacted quickest to the opportunity and bundled the ball into the net to put Pirates ahead and give the home supporters plenty to celebrate.
The goal lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium and gave the Buccaneers renewed confidence.
Moremi Doubles Pirates’ Lead
Pirates continued to push forward after taking the lead and were rewarded again in the 69th minute.
Tshepang Moremi capitalised on a defensive lapse from Durban City before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to double the Buccaneers’ advantage.
At 2-0, Pirates had established a comfortable cushion and shifted their focus towards managing the remainder of the contest.
Buccaneers See Out the Victory
Ouaddou turned to his bench in the closing stages, introducing Oswin Appollis and Sebastian Pedersen in the 71st minute as Pirates looked to maintain their control and protect their lead.
Durban City attempted to respond and brought on experienced players, including Tashreeq Morris and Haashim Domingo, in search of a way back into the match.
However, Pirates remained composed defensively.
Chaine and the backline dealt with the visitors’ late pressure to preserve their clean sheet and secure all three points.
