June 20, 2025 – Pasadena, USA
Brazilian side Botafogo pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by defeating French giants Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in a tightly contested Group B match at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium on Thursday.
The only goal of the game came in the 36th minute when Igor Jesus calmly slotted home a low finish following a smart pass from Jefferson Savarino, which deflected slightly off a PSG defender before nestling into the net past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG dominated possession and created multiple chances but were repeatedly denied by Botafogo’s disciplined defensive setup and sharp counterattacks. The loss ended PSG’s six-game scoring streak and marked their first shutout since March.
Botafogo head coach Renato Paiva praised his players for their resilience and unity, stating, “We played a match that was almost perfect, technically speaking. We were what PSG has been for some time — a real team.”
The result throws Group B wide open, with Botafogo now sitting top of the group on 6 points. PSG remain on 3 points and will need a win in their final group-stage match against Seattle Sounders to keep their hopes alive.
