June 20, 2025 – Seattle, USA
Atlético Madrid kept their hopes alive in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a solid 3-1 victory over MLS side Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field on Thursday night.
Spanish midfielder Pablo Barrios was the star of the match, scoring a brilliant brace to lead Atlético to their first win in Group B. Barrios opened the scoring in the 11th minute and sealed the result with his second in the 55th minute. Veteran defender Axel Witsel added a goal early in the second half (47′) to make it 2-0 before Seattle pulled one back through Albert Rusnák in the 50th minute.
Despite the win, Atlético Madrid’s progression to the next round is far from guaranteed. With Paris Saint-Germain, Botafogo, and Atlético now all tied on three points, Diego Simeone’s men will need to beat Botafogo in their final group match by at least three goals to qualify for the knockout stage on goal difference.
The match was played in front of 51,636 fans, but Seattle’s tournament ends in disappointment. The Sounders are officially eliminated from contention after two group-stage losses.
Atlético now turn their attention to a must-win clash against Botafogo, where only a convincing victory will be enough to extend their stay in the competition.
