AmaZulu FC forward Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has been rewarded for his explosive start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season after being named the league’s Player of the Month for August.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) confirmed the monthly award on Tuesday, celebrating the standout performers from the opening fixtures of the campaign. Ngwenya’s outstanding displays in the colours of Usuthu proved impossible to ignore, with the Zimbabwean international earning recognition from the media-accredited judging panel.
Ngwenya’s August Masterclass: Goals, Assists and Match-Winning Impact
Ngwenya announced himself as one of the league’s most dangerous attacking threats during August, delivering a remarkable return of five goals and one assist in four matches.
His combination of power, movement, and composure in front of goal saw him rise to the top of the early Betway Premiership scoring charts, while his contributions played a crucial role in AmaZulu’s impressive opening run.
The 23-year-old’s goals were not just individual achievements. They helped Usuthu collect valuable points and establish themselves among the early pace-setters, with the Durban outfit sitting in fourth place on the league standings after the opening fixtures.
Ngwenya claimed the prestigious award ahead of strong competition, beating TS Galaxy striker Victor Letsoalo and Orlando Pirates defender Lebone Seema, who were also recognised for their impressive performances during August.
A Rising Star Making His Mark at Usuthu
The Player of the Month award represents another major step forward in Ngwenya’s rapidly developing career.
Since joining AmaZulu, the former FC Platinum striker has adapted quickly to the demands of South African top-flight football. His physical strength, intelligent positioning, tireless pressing, and clinical finishing have made him a constant threat for opposition defenders.
With the 2026/27 campaign still in its early stages, AmaZulu supporters will be hoping their new attacking leader can maintain his incredible form as the club targets domestic success and a possible return to continental competition.
Other August 2026 Betway Premiership Award Winners
Ngwenya was not the only star celebrated during the league’s first monthly awards of the season.
Coach of the Month:
Abdeslam Ouaddou earned the honour after guiding defending champions Orlando Pirates through an unbeaten opening month. The Buccaneers recorded three victories and one draw in their first four matches, setting the early pace in the title race.
Goal of the Month:
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Brayan Leon secured the award for his spectacular and technically brilliant volley against AmaZulu.
Can Ngwenya Challenge for the Golden Boot?
After such a dominant opening month, expectations are already rising around Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s potential to challenge for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot at the end of the season.
If the AmaZulu striker continues producing goals at this remarkable rate, he could become one of the defining attacking figures of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.
