CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Stellenbosch FC have officially strengthened their midfield department with the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou.
The 28-year-old Soweto-born midfielder has joined the Western Cape club as a free agent after putting pen to paper on a long-term contract, following the conclusion of his stay with Amakhosi at the end of June.
Matlou Begins New Chapter in the Winelands
Matlou arrives at Stellenbosch FC with valuable top-flight experience and a proven ability to operate in the heart of midfield. During his time at Kaizer Chiefs, the technically gifted player made 46 appearances and was part of the squad that lifted the 2025 Nedbank Cup.
His time at Naturena was, however, disrupted by injury setbacks, limiting his involvement during the previous campaign. The move to Stellenbosch presents Matlou with an opportunity to revive his career and return to a province where he previously spent part of his football development.
Before making his mark in the Premier Soccer League, Matlou gained experience with Cape Town-based sides Cape Town All Stars and Cape Umoya United during loan spells earlier in his career.
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie expressed his excitement about the midfielder’s arrival, highlighting the value Matlou is expected to bring to the squad.

Stellenbosch Strengthen Squad Ahead of New Season
The signing of Matlou comes as part of Stellenbosch FC’s preparations for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, with the club showing clear ambition to compete at the highest level.
The Cape Winelands outfit also confirmed the arrival of Mamelodi Sundowns defender Terrence Mashego on a season-long loan deal, adding further quality and depth to their squad.
With the addition of experienced players like Matlou and Mashego, Stellenbosch will be aiming to build on their recent progress and continue challenging among South Africa’s leading clubs.
