Orlando Pirates Suffer Heavy Defeat to FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo in CAF Champions League

International Football

Orlando Pirates were left stunned in Lubumbashi as they fell to a 3-0 defeat against Congolese side FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Sunday afternoon.

Playing at the Stade Frédéric Kibassa Maliba, the Buccaneers endured a difficult afternoon against a spirited Lupopo side that took full advantage of their home conditions and strong crowd support. The hosts opened the scoring within the first few minutes, setting the tone for a challenging encounter for the South Africans.

Despite Pirates’ efforts to regain control, the Congolese outfit continued to dominate key battles across the pitch. Their relentless pressing and quick transitions caused problems throughout the match, eventually leading to two more goals one midway through the second half and another deep into stoppage time to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

It was a frustrating outing for the Soweto giants, who struggled to find rhythm and consistency in front of goal. Their usually potent attack was neutralised, while defensive lapses proved costly in a match that leaves them with plenty of work to do in the return leg.

The result means Orlando Pirates will need a big turnaround in the second leg in Johannesburg if they are to keep their CAF Champions League hopes alive. With the home crowd behind them, the Buccaneers will be aiming to produce a memorable performance to overturn the deficit and advance to the group stages.
