The 2026/27 Betway Premiership season is beginning to produce its share of surprises, and Milford FC are quickly emerging as one of the teams demanding attention.
The KwaZulu-Natal newcomers delivered one of their biggest performances of the campaign over the weekend, dismantling provincial rivals Richards Bay FC 5-1 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
The emphatic victory lifted The Stallions into fifth place with 11 points from their opening seven matches, underlining their ability to compete against established top-flight opposition.
For a side still finding its feet at this level, Milford’s early-season form suggests they may have ambitions beyond simply surviving their first campaign in the elite division.
A Red Card Changes the Game
Milford controlled large periods of the opening half, but the match took a decisive turn in the 24th minute.
Richards Bay midfielder Lindokuhle Zikhali lost possession in midfield before bringing down Milford striker Siphosethu Ndlabi inside the penalty area.
The referee showed Zikhali a straight red card and awarded Milford a penalty.
Ndlabi took responsibility from the spot four minutes later, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Milford the lead.
The hosts continued to apply pressure and were rewarded again just before halftime. Following a Sifiso Mdluli cross, Mvelo Zikakayo reacted quickest to a loose ball inside a crowded penalty area and doubled Milford’s advantage.
At the break, the Stallions had established a commanding 2-0 lead.
Milford Turn the Screw After the Break
Richards Bay needed an immediate response in the second half, but Milford had other ideas.
Just nine minutes after the restart, Zikakayo completed his brace, finishing clinically after combining with Ndlabi to put the hosts firmly in control at 3-0.
Richards Bay eventually found a way back into the contest in the 77th minute when Mehluleli Ndelu pulled a goal back.
Any possibility of a dramatic comeback, however, was quickly extinguished.
Milford head coach Xolani Mzileni made effective use of his substitutes as the Stallions continued to exploit the spaces available to them.
Phakamani Jwara restored Milford’s three-goal advantage in the 84th minute with a composed finish before Jabulile Gxakoshe completed the rout in stoppage time, scoring in the 90+2nd minute to seal a memorable 5-1 victory.

Are The Stallions Ready for More?
For a newly promoted side, the initial objective is often straightforward: establish themselves in the division and avoid becoming involved in a relegation battle.
Milford FC, however, are beginning to suggest that their ambitions could be considerably higher.
Their attacking movement, composure in front of goal and ability to capitalise on opportunities were all evident against Richards Bay. The five-goal haul also demonstrated that the Stallions can be ruthless when presented with an advantage.
The challenge now is consistency.
One emphatic victory can capture attention, but maintaining that level of performance across an entire Betway Premiership campaign is a completely different test. Milford’s upcoming fixtures will provide a clearer indication of whether their strong start can develop into a sustained challenge for a place near the top of the table.
Their next test against Durban City FC will offer another opportunity to prove that this was more than just a one-off performance.
For now, though, the message from the Stallions is clear: Milford FC are not in the Betway Premiership merely to make up the numbers.
