Orlando Pirates’ MTN8 title defence remains alive after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over a determined Durban City side at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday.
The Buccaneers looked set for a tense penalty shootout before substitute Gamphani Lungu produced a moment of magic in the 119th minute, smashing home a spectacular volley to send Pirates through and break Durban City’s hearts.
Penalty Drama Gives Pirates the Advantage
The quarter-final clash began with both sides showing their tactical discipline, with Orlando Pirates looking to take control of proceedings on home soil while Durban City remained compact and organised.
The first major turning point arrived in the 34th minute when Tshepang Moremi was brought down inside the penalty area by Durban City defender Brooklyn Poggenpoel.
After consulting the referee’s decision, Poggenpoel was shown a red card, leaving Durban City with 10 players and handing Pirates a golden opportunity from the penalty spot.
Patrick Maswanganyi stepped up and showed nerves of steel, calmly converting in the 36th minute to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Brave Durban City Fight Back With Ten Men
Despite being reduced to 10 players, Durban City refused to surrender and showed tremendous character against the defending champions.
Khalil Ben Youssef’s side responded strongly after the restart and found their equaliser in the 51st minute. A well-worked attacking move down the right flank created space for Jean Lwamba, who finished from close range to bring the score level at 1-1.
The visitors’ defensive organisation frustrated Pirates for the remainder of normal time, with Durban City holding firm and forcing the contest into extra time.
Lungu Becomes the Hero at the Death
With the possibility of penalties becoming increasingly likely, Orlando Pirates continued searching for the decisive moment.
That moment arrived in the final minute of extra time. In the 119th minute, Lungu reacted quickest inside the box, connecting perfectly with a loose ball and unleashing a powerful volley that flew into the back of the net.
The late winner secured a dramatic 2-1 victory for Orlando Pirates, booking their place in the next stage of the MTN8 while keeping their dream of retaining the Wafa Wafa Cup firmly alive.
For Durban City, it was a heartbreaking ending after an outstanding display of resilience, but Pirates once again showed their ability to find a way when the pressure was at its highest.
