Mamelodi Sundowns climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership standings after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In a thrilling encounter in Umlazi, the Brazilians were pushed all the way by a determined Abafana Bes’thende side but showed the mentality of champions to claim maximum points. After surrendering their first-half advantage, Sundowns found a late winner through midfield maestro Teboho Mokoena, whose moment of brilliance proved decisive.
Siyanda Mthanti Gives Sundowns the Perfect Start
Sundowns began the match with their trademark attacking dominance, controlling possession and dictating the tempo from the opening stages.
Their early pressure was rewarded in the 14th minute when Siyanda Mthanti opened the scoring. Following a well-worked move in the final third, Mthanti displayed composure inside the box to fire past Golden Arrows goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa, handing the visitors a deserved 1-0 lead.
Golden Arrows, however, refused to be overwhelmed. Under the tactical leadership of Pitso Dladla, the hosts remained organised and looked dangerous on the counter-attack, testing a Sundowns defence anchored by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Despite their efforts, the Brazilians maintained their advantage heading into the halftime interval.
Junior Dion Restores Parity for Arrows
The second half brought a renewed sense of urgency from Golden Arrows, who pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 76th minute when Junior Dion found the back of the net. The striker reacted quickly inside the penalty area to level matters at 1-1, sparking celebrations among the home supporters and setting up a dramatic final quarter.
With momentum shifting, Arrows appeared capable of holding Sundowns to a valuable point.
Teboho Mokoena Delivers Late Sundowns Magic
Just when the match looked destined to end all square, Sundowns produced another reminder of their championship credentials.
In the 88th minute, Teboho Mokoena stepped forward with a moment of individual quality. The Bafana Bafana midfielder produced a calm and clinical finish to restore Sundowns’ lead and silence the home crowd.
Golden Arrows pushed for another response, but the Tshwane giants showed their experience by managing the closing stages effectively, including five minutes of stoppage time, to secure a valuable 2-1 away victory.
Sundowns Rise to the Summit
The result sees Mamelodi Sundowns move onto 16 points from six matches, taking them above Orlando Pirates and into first place on the Betway Premiership table.
For Golden Arrows, the defeat was a disappointing outcome after a brave and competitive performance. Despite missing out on points, Abafana Bes’thende demonstrated that they can compete with the league’s strongest sides as the 2026/27 campaign continues.
