Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the MTN8 semi-finals after a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over a determined Polokwane City side at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.
In a thrilling cup encounter filled with attacking moments, tactical battles, and relentless intensity, it took a moment of individual brilliance from Cassius Mailula in extra time to finally settle a contest that had both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats.
Early Drama as Polokwane Shock Sundowns
The quarter-final burst into life from the opening minutes, with Polokwane City showing no fear against the reigning domestic giants. Rise and Shine stunned the home crowd in the 6th minute when they took an early lead through Bonginkosi Dlamini.
A perfectly delivered corner found Dlamini at the back post, and after controlling the ball under pressure, he produced a composed low finish into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with no chance.
The early setback sparked a response from the African champions, who quickly began to take control of possession and dictate the rhythm of the match. Their persistence paid off in the 20th minute when Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena restored parity.
Making the most of a clever delivery from debutant Antonio van Wyk, Mokoena took a controlled touch before firing a brilliant low left-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
Sundowns continued pushing forward and completed the turnaround before half-time. A defensive mistake from Polokwane City allowed Antonio van Wyk to react quickest inside the box, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Mathebula to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
Polokwane Fight Back Before Mailula’s Heroics
Despite falling behind, Polokwane City showed tremendous character after the restart. The visitors remained disciplined, stayed compact defensively, and continued to threaten on the counterattack.
Their resilience was rewarded as they found the equaliser, bringing the score to 2-2 and forcing the match into extra time after a fiercely contested 90 minutes.
With both teams showing signs of fatigue, the additional period created more space on the pitch — and Sundowns’ attacking quality eventually made the difference.
The decisive moment arrived when Cassius Mailula stepped up as the hero of the night. The talented forward produced a moment of brilliance, breaking through the Polokwane City defence before finding the back of the net with the crucial extra-time winner.
His strike sealed a hard-fought 3-2 victory and booked Sundowns’ place in the MTN8 semi-finals.
Sundowns March On, Polokwane Exit With Pride
The victory keeps Mamelodi Sundowns’ hopes of adding more silverware alive as they continue their pursuit of another successful season.
For Polokwane City, the defeat brings their MTN8 journey to an end, but their performance against one of the country’s strongest sides showcased their quality, fighting spirit, and ability to compete at the highest level.
It was a true cup classic — one filled with drama, intensity, and a late moment of magic from Cassius Mailula that separated two teams who gave everything on the night.
