Football legend Lionel Messi has spoken publicly about his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, offering rare insight into their relationship during a recent interview with DSports.
Messi clarified that, while they are not close off the pitch, there is deep mutual respect between them.
“We’re not friends because we’ve never shared time together off the pitch,” Messi explained. “But I have a lot of respect and admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo and for the career he’s had and continues to have.”
The Inter Miami star went on to describe their rivalry as purely professional and one that helped elevate both their careers.
“The competition with him was on the pitch. It was a beautiful stage for football fans around the world, but everything stayed on the field,” he added.
Their rivalry, which dominated global football for more than a decade, began in La Liga when Messi was with Barcelona and Ronaldo with Real Madrid. Between them, they have won 13 Ballon d’Or awards and broken countless records, becoming two of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
Despite persistent media-fueled comparisons, Messi’s latest comments reflect a mature and respectful perspective, acknowledging the unique journey he and Ronaldo have shared in world football.
