Kaizer Chiefs Secure Back-to-Back CAF Qualification After Crucial Polokwane Victory

Betway Premiership

POLOKWANE – Kaizer Chiefs have officially booked their place in continental football once again. Following a dramatic 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday evening, Amakhosi mathematically secured a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership, guaranteeing qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup.

The result marks another major milestone in the club’s resurgence, as Chiefs secure back-to-back appearances in African competition for the first time in several years.

A Season Built on Growth and Resilience

The qualification reflects the progress made by Amakhosi over the past two seasons. Chiefs entered the 2025/26 campaign already competing in the CAF Confederation Cup after earning qualification through their memorable Nedbank Cup triumph last season.

Supporters still remember the electric atmosphere when Chiefs defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final to lift the trophy and finally end their long wait for silverware. That victory not only delivered a major domestic honour but also reopened the doors to continental football for the Soweto giants.

Their current CAF Confederation Cup journey has provided valuable experience, with Chiefs battling against strong opposition including Egyptian powerhouses Zamalek and Al Masry during a demanding group-stage campaign. The lessons learned on the continent have clearly strengthened the squad’s mentality and consistency in league competition.

Late Drama Seals Historic Achievement

Knowing victory would secure third place beyond doubt, Chiefs faced a determined Sekhukhune United side in a tense encounter that remained goalless deep into the second half.

However, Amakhosi once again showed character when it mattered most.

  • 86th Minute: Tashreeq Morris completed a dream return by calmly finishing from close range after an excellent delivery from Glody Lilepo.
  • 90+1 Minute: Youngster Mfundo Vilakazi displayed composure beyond his years by converting a late penalty to seal the victory and ignite celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Amakhosi Sending a Statement

With 51 points and two matches still remaining, Chiefs can no longer be overtaken by the chasing pack. Securing a top-three finish confirms that their recent success is not simply a once-off achievement, but part of a growing culture of consistency and ambition at Naturena.

The Glamour Boys are rebuilding their reputation as a club expected to challenge domestically while representing South Africa on the continental stage every season.

As the 2025/26 campaign approaches its conclusion, the Amakhosi faithful can celebrate knowing that the famous gold and black jersey will once again fly the South African flag across Africa next season.
