ARLINGTON, Texas — France’s hopes of reaching a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final came crashing down at Dallas Stadium as Spain delivered a composed and clinical semifinal performance to secure a 2-0 victory.
Despite arriving as slight favourites, Les Bleus struggled to break down a disciplined Spanish side that controlled the rhythm of the match and punished defensive mistakes. The defeat ends France’s pursuit of another World Cup title, leaving Didier Deschamps and his players to regroup for the bronze medal match in Miami this weekend.
France’s troubles began in the 22nd minute when a defensive error from Lucas Digne inside the penalty area resulted in a foul on Lamine Yamal. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up from the spot and calmly converted the penalty, sending Mike Maignan the wrong way and giving Spain the perfect start.
The situation worsened moments later when France suffered a major injury setback.
