Domestic Football Returns With a Blockbuster: Pirates and Sundowns Set for MTN8 Final

Betway Premiership

After a two-week pause for international football, the attention of South African football supporters is about to shift back to the domestic game.

And there could hardly be a bigger fixture to welcome domestic football back.

The 2026 MTN8 Final will headline the return, with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns set to meet at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 October 2026.

Kick-off is scheduled for 18:00. The Premier Soccer League has officially confirmed Moses Mabhida Stadium as the venue for the showpiece.

The international break makes way for club football

The 2026/27 PSL season was interrupted by a FIFA international window that ran from 21 September to 6 October, creating a period in which attention moved away from domestic competition and towards national-team football.

With the international window now coming to an end, South African football is preparing for the return of competitive club action.

The first major domestic occasion will be particularly significant because it is not an ordinary league fixture. It is a cup final involving two of the biggest clubs in the country.

Orlando Pirates versus Mamelodi Sundowns.

The timing gives the MTN8 Final an even greater sense of anticipation, with supporters having spent the international break waiting for the domestic season to resume.

Pirates and Sundowns meet for MTN8 glory

Pirates booked their place in the final after an impressive run through the competition.

The Buccaneers defeated Sekhukhune United 3-0 in the second leg of their semi-final, completing a 4-0 aggregate victory and putting themselves within one match of another MTN8 trophy.

Sundowns, meanwhile, had to work considerably harder for their place in the decider.

The Brazilians defeated Golden Arrows 3-2 in the second leg, overturning their first-leg deficit and progressing on the away-goals rule after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.

That has set up another meeting between two clubs who have become familiar opponents in major domestic matches.

A familiar MTN8 stage

There is also recent history between the two clubs in this competition.

Pirates and Sundowns previously met in the 2023/24 MTN8 Final, also at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with Pirates eventually winning the trophy after a penalty shootout.

The 2026 final therefore gives Sundowns another opportunity to claim the trophy against Pirates, while the Buccaneers will be looking to extend their remarkable run in the competition.

The PSL’s official MTN8 information confirms that Pirates are chasing a fifth consecutive MTN8 title.

Moses Mabhida prepares for another football spectacle

Moses Mabhida Stadium will once again be at the centre of South African football.

The iconic Durban venue has become closely associated with the MTN8 Final and will host the showpiece on 10 October. The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed that preparations are being coordinated with the PSL, stadium management, law enforcement, emergency services and other stakeholders ahead of the match.

The demand from supporters has already demonstrated the scale of the occasion.

The PSL confirmed on 2 October that tickets for the final had sold out. Gates are scheduled to open at 14:00, with supporters advised to arrive early for security and stadium-entry procedures.

The PSL has also warned supporters that screenshots and printed tickets will not be accepted and that tickets will not be sold at the stadium.

The domestic game returns in style

The international break may have temporarily moved the spotlight away from the PSL, but the return of domestic football promises to bring that attention straight back.

And the opening act is a major one.

Pirates and Sundowns will walk into Moses Mabhida Stadium with the MTN8 trophy at stake, while thousands of supporters prepare to turn Durban into a sea of club colours.

For Pirates, it is an opportunity to continue their dominance of the competition.

For Sundowns, it is a chance to lift the trophy and prevent their rivals from adding another MTN8 title to their collection.

For South African football, it is the perfect way to restart the domestic calendar after the international break.

The FIFA break is almost over. The domestic game is back. And it returns with Pirates against Sundowns in a final.

ONE STADIUM. TWO GIANTS. ONE TROPHY. 90 MINUTES TO GLORY.
