Bafana Bafana return home from their latest international assignment with plenty of optimism after completing a highly successful window under returning head coach Pitso Mosimane.
South Africa won all three of their matches during the international break, defeating Guinea and Eritrea in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches before securing an impressive 1-0 friendly victory over Egypt in Cairo.
The results have given Mosimane a strong foundation as he begins his latest chapter with the national team.
Three matches, three victories
Bafana opened the international window with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Guinea at Orlando Stadium.
The result was particularly important because Guinea are among South Africa’s main competitors in Group D of the AFCON qualifiers. Samukele Kabini scored the decisive goal late in the match to give Bafana a winning start under Mosimane.
South Africa then travelled to Cairo, where they produced their most emphatic performance of the qualifying campaign so far.
A 5-0 victory over Eritrea saw Bafana collect another three points and move to six points from their opening two Group D matches.
Relebohile Mofokeng was one of the standout performers, scoring twice, while Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh also found the net. Oswin Appollis played an important creative role, providing assists during the emphatic victory.
The result left South Africa at the top of Group D and strengthened their position in the race for qualification.
Bafana save the biggest statement for Egypt
The final assignment of the window brought another significant challenge as South Africa faced Egypt in Cairo.
Despite making extensive changes to his starting line-up, Mosimane’s team produced a disciplined performance to defeat the Pharaohs 1-0.
The decisive moment arrived early in the second half when Puso Dithejane scored on his Bafana Bafana debut.
The result completed a perfect three-match international window for South Africa and provided another indication of the depth available to Mosimane.
Egypt had opportunities during the match, but Bafana remained organised and defended their advantage to secure one of their most notable away victories of the window.
Mosimane gives younger players an opportunity
One of the most encouraging aspects of the international break was the opportunity given to players who are still establishing themselves at international level.
Mosimane made nine changes for the Egypt friendly after the two AFCON qualifiers, allowing several younger and fringe players to test themselves against one of Africa’s established football nations.
The decision paid off.
Dithejane became the match-winner, while players such as Lebone Seema and Owethu Makhanya also gained valuable experience in a demanding international environment.
For Mosimane, the objective is not simply to win matches but to build a squad capable of competing over the long term.
The Egypt victory showed that the coach has options beyond his established first-choice players.
Mofokeng and Appollis among the standout performers
The international break also highlighted the attacking potential available to Bafana.
Mofokeng’s two goals against Eritrea were particularly significant as he opened his international scoring account in impressive fashion.
The young attacker showed confidence, composure and creativity throughout the match and was a constant threat to the Eritrean defence.
Appollis also made a major contribution during the 5-0 victory, providing important creativity from the attacking areas.
With players such as Mofokeng, Appollis, Rayners and others competing for places, Mosimane now has greater competition within the squad.
A perfect start, but Mosimane remains cautious
Despite the three victories, Mosimane has made it clear that Bafana cannot afford to become complacent.
South Africa’s immediate objective remains qualification for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
The coach has stressed that the team has not yet achieved anything significant enough to celebrate prematurely, with the decisive qualifying matches still ahead.
That approach could prove important as expectations around Bafana increase following their impressive start.
The team scored eight goals across the three matches and conceded only once, producing victories against Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt.
However, the next competitive challenge will provide another test.
Kenya next for Bafana Bafana
South Africa’s attention will now turn towards their next AFCON qualifying assignments against Kenya, with the two nations set to meet in back-to-back Group D fixtures.
Those matches will carry significant importance in determining the final qualification picture.
With Kenya already guaranteed a place at the 2027 tournament as one of the co-hosts, South Africa, Guinea and Eritrea are competing for the remaining qualification place from the group.
Bafana’s perfect start means they have put themselves in a strong position, but the team will need to maintain its consistency when competitive action resumes.
A promising new chapter
For now, Bafana Bafana return home with momentum, confidence and several encouraging questions for Mosimane to consider.
The coach has won all three of his matches since returning to the national team, while younger players have been given opportunities to demonstrate that they can compete at international level.
The victories over Guinea and Eritrea have provided a strong foundation in the AFCON qualifiers, while the win over Egypt offered an additional boost and demonstrated the team’s ability to compete away from home against a major African football nation.
There is still a long road ahead, but this international window has given Bafana Bafana supporters plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
Three matches. Three wins. Eight goals scored. One goal conceded.
For Mosimane and his players, the challenge now is to ensure that this promising start develops into something much bigger.
