Big Payday: CAF Announces Massive $2 Million Boost for Champions League and Confederation Cup Winners

International Football

The landscape of African club football is undergoing a financial transformation. In a groundbreaking announcement, Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, revealed a dramatic increase in prize money for the continent’s most prestigious club competitions, starting from the 2025/26 season.

Both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will see a remarkable $2 million increase in their respective winners’ prize pots, marking the dawn of a new era of financial prosperity for African football clubs.

A 140% Increase Under Motsepe’s Leadership

Since assuming leadership of CAF five years ago, Dr. Motsepe has placed a strong emphasis on the commercial viability of African football. The latest prize fund increases highlight a remarkable growth trajectory:

  • CAF Champions League: The winner’s prize has skyrocketed from $2.5 million in 2021 to a staggering $6 million for the 2025/26 season, reflecting a 140% increase.
  • CAF Confederation Cup: The growth here is even more astounding. From a $1.25 million prize in 2021, the winner will now pocket $4 million—an impressive 220% surge.

These changes push the total annual investment in prize money and solidarity payments for African clubs to over $42 million, more than double the $18.8 million allocated just four years ago.

Supporting the Grassroots: Solidarity Payments

It’s not just the champions who will reap the rewards. In a significant move to support clubs at all levels, CAF has also doubled the solidarity payments for teams eliminated in the early stages of competition. Clubs that are knocked out in the 2025/26 campaign’s preliminary rounds will receive $100,000 each, up from the $50,000 introduced in 2024. This financial boost has already sparked record-breaking participation, with 130 clubs from across the continent competing in the current cycle.

Why This Matters for African Football

According to Dr. Motsepe, these increases form part of a broader vision to elevate African club football to the global stage. By offering substantial financial incentives, CAF aims to achieve several key objectives for African clubs:

  • Retaining Top Talent: Larger prize pools allow clubs to offer more attractive salaries, ensuring that Africa’s best players remain on the continent for longer.
  • Improving Infrastructure: Increased revenue enables clubs to invest in state-of-the-art training facilities and youth academies.
  • Enhancing Professionalism: The higher stakes foster better club management, more competitive matches, and a greater appeal to sponsors and broadcasters.

Key Dates for the 2025/26 Season

Fans and clubs can already mark their calendars for the pivotal moments of the season. CAF has confirmed the following dates for the two-legged finals:

  • TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Final: Between May 9 and May 16, 2026.
  • TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Final: May 15 and May 24, 2026.

As the prize money reaches unprecedented heights, the race for continental glory is set to become more competitive than ever before. With $6 million up for grabs, the “Holy Grail” of African football has never been more valuable.
