As the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season gathers momentum, a familiar picture is beginning to emerge at the top of the South African football standings.
Mamelodi Sundowns have once again set the early pace, opening up a significant advantage over their closest challengers. However, a dramatic weekend of action, including a late twist against Chippa United, has shown that the title race could still produce plenty of surprises.
With several teams refusing to allow the defending champions to pull too far ahead, the question is already being asked: can anyone keep pace with Sundowns?
Sundowns Survive Late Scare in East London
The Brazilians travelled to the Buffalo City Municipality Stadium full of confidence after a commanding 3-0 victory over Siwelele FC.
For much of their encounter with Chippa United, Sundowns appeared on course for another routine victory. However, the Chilli Boys had other ideas.
The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, with Sirgio Kammies finding the back of the net and putting Chippa in front.
Just when it appeared Sundowns were heading towards their first defeat of the campaign, the visitors produced a dramatic response.
Substitute Antonio Van Wyk struck deep into stoppage time in the 90+8th minute, rescuing a valuable 1-1 draw for the league leaders.
The result cost Sundowns two points, but they remain firmly in control at the summit with 20 points from eight matches.
The Chasing Pack Refuses to Back Down
Although Sundowns have established an early advantage, the teams behind them are beginning to apply pressure.
Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu Keep Pace
Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC are both on 13 points, leaving them within touching distance of the leaders.
AmaZulu’s recent narrow victory over Marumo Gallants has further underlined their strong start, while Pirates continue to remain firmly in the title conversation.
With games in hand also playing a role in the current standings, the gap could change significantly as the season progresses.
Kaizer Chiefs Searching for Consistency
Kaizer Chiefs currently occupy fourth place with 12 points.
Amakhosi have shown encouraging moments under their current project, but inconsistency has prevented them from making a stronger push towards the top of the standings.
Turning draws into victories will be crucial if Chiefs are to remain among the teams challenging for the title.
Milford FC Making an Impression
One of the most intriguing early-season stories has been the performance of Milford FC.
The newcomers sit fifth with 11 points after an impressive 5-1 victory over Richards Bay, demonstrating that they are capable of competing with more established teams in the division.
Their early form adds another layer of intrigue to an already competitive top half of the table.

Can Anyone Stop Sundowns?
Sundowns’ early position reflects the strength and depth that have helped them dominate South African football in recent seasons.
Their squad depth and ability to adapt across different competitions make them a formidable opponent. However, the draw against Chippa United also demonstrated that even the league leaders can be pushed when opponents remain disciplined and competitive for the full 90 minutes.
The challenge for Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs will be maintaining consistency.
If the chasing teams can build winning runs while avoiding dropped points against teams lower down the standings, the gap at the top could become much tighter.
For now, Sundowns remain in control. But with the season still in its early stages, there is plenty of football left to be played.
The title race may have a familiar leader, but the chasing pack is refusing to disappear.
