Axes Falling Early: Marumo Gallants and Siwelele Make Shock Coaching Changes as Betway Premiership Pressure Mounts

Betway Premiership

The 2026/27 Betway Premiership season is still in its early stages, but the intensity and pressure of South Africa’s top-flight football landscape have already started to take their toll.

Two clubs, Marumo Gallants and Siwelele FC, have made major technical changes after disappointing starts to the campaign, highlighting the unforgiving nature of the league where results often determine the future of coaches.

The swift decisions have sparked debate among supporters and football observers, with questions being raised over whether clubs are giving coaches enough time to build sustainable projects or whether immediate results remain the only priority.

Gallants Part Ways With Phuti Mohafe

Marumo Gallants have confirmed the departure of head coach Phuti Mohafe and assistant coach Musa Bilankulu, bringing an early end to their time with Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.

Mohafe was appointed during the off-season after leaving Polokwane City (Rise and Shine), with expectations that he would help build stability and guide Gallants into a more competitive position in the Betway Premiership.

However, the team endured a difficult start to the season, with inconsistent performances leaving them struggling near the bottom end of the league standings in 15th position.

With pressure increasing after a disappointing run of results, the club opted to make a change in an attempt to revive their campaign.

Second assistant coach Trevor Mathiane has been placed in charge on an interim basis, with his immediate task being to restore confidence, improve results, and bring stability to the dressing room while the club searches for a permanent head coach.

Siwelele Make Technical Team Changes

Gallants are not the only side experiencing early-season challenges. Siwelele FC have also decided to restructure their technical team after a difficult beginning to their Betway Premiership campaign.

The club confirmed that head coach Lehlohonolo Seema and assistant coach Willem Jackson have left their positions with immediate effect.

Addressing their supporters, Siwelele acknowledged that the team’s performances have not met expectations and that changes were necessary to move forward.

“This has been a challenging period for the club, and our supporters deserve better than what they have seen so far this season,” the club stated.

Godfrey Mosoetsa has since been appointed caretaker coach, with the responsibility of stabilising the team while management conducts a broader assessment of the squad and technical structures.

The Growing Pressure on Betway Premiership Coaches

The early departures of Mohafe and Seema once again underline the demanding environment coaches face in South African football.

While many coaches require time to implement their tactical ideas and build competitive teams, the reality of modern football means that poor results can quickly put their positions under threat.

In the Betway Premiership, every point carries significant weight. League positions affect club ambitions, sponsorship expectations, financial stability, and hopes of competing for domestic and continental honours.

For Gallants and Siwelele, the challenge now is whether these early coaching changes can bring the desired improvement or whether instability will create further challenges during the season.

As Mathiane and Mosoetsa take charge, supporters will be hoping that fresh leadership can inspire a turnaround and help their teams climb the standings.
