Who Has the Edge? Pirates vs Sundowns Head-to-Head Before the MTN8 Final

Betway Premiership

Two of South Africa’s biggest football clubs are preparing for another meeting with silverware on the line. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will meet in the 2026 MTN8 Final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 10 October, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.

It is a final carrying history, recent form, contrasting ambitions and plenty of psychological intrigue. Pirates are chasing an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title, while Sundowns are looking to reclaim a trophy they last won in 2021.

The two clubs have already produced one unforgettable MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida. In 2023, the match finished 0-0 after extra time before Pirates won the penalty shootout 3-1.

So, who has the edge going into Saturday’s showdown? The answer is not straightforward.

Sundowns Hold the Broader Head-to-Head Advantage

When the rivalry is viewed across its long history, Sundowns have generally held the upper hand. The PSL recorded 114 meetings between the clubs ahead of their 2025 MTN8 campaign, with Sundowns winning 47, Pirates winning 34 and 33 matches ending in draws. Sundowns had also scored more goals across those encounters.

The overall record therefore gives Sundowns a statistical advantage, although historical head-to-head numbers do not necessarily tell the full story when the competition changes.

Pirates Have the MTN8 Advantage

The MTN8 record provides a fascinating contrast. According to the PSL, the teams had met 14 times in the competition before their latest final, with Pirates holding a narrow advantage of five wins to Sundowns’ four, while five matches ended in draws.

Pirates have also advanced more often in MTN8 ties. That is significant because Saturday’s match is not a league fixture. There will be no points to collect and no opportunity to make up for a disappointing result the following weekend. There will simply be one trophy and one winner.

That environment has suited Pirates particularly well in recent years.

The 2023 Final Still Matters

Three years ago, these same teams met in the MTN8 Final at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Neither side could score during 120 minutes before Pirates eventually won 3-1 on penalties.

That result remains an important psychological reference point ahead of Saturday’s meeting. For Pirates, it is proof that they have already overcome Sundowns in precisely this environment. For Sundowns, it represents an opportunity to rewrite the story.

The players and circumstances are different in 2026, but the memory of that night will inevitably form part of the build-up.

Recent Meetings Favour Sundowns

The most recent league meetings have given Sundowns plenty of confidence. The two teams drew 1-1 in November 2025 before Sundowns won 2-1 away to Pirates in February 2026.

That February victory is particularly relevant because it is the most recent competitive meeting between the sides before Saturday’s final. Sundowns therefore enter the contest knowing they have recently beaten Pirates, while Pirates can point to their victory over Sundowns in a major final.

Recent league confidence belongs to Sundowns. Recent MTN8 final history belongs to Pirates.

Pirates’ Form Has Been Impressive

Pirates enter the final as the reigning Betway Premiership champions and have made an excellent start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The Buccaneers defeated Sekhukhune United 2-0 in the league on 25 August before producing a 4-0 victory over Kruger United on 1 September. They then defeated Marumo Gallants 2-0 on 20 September.

By the latest PSL league standings, Pirates had six wins from seven matches and 19 points, placing them second behind Sundowns.

Pirates are therefore not reaching this final simply because of their historical MTN8 success. They are also performing strongly in the current league campaign.

Sundowns Have Been Even Stronger Domestically

Sundowns, however, have started the new Betway Premiership campaign at an even faster pace. The Brazilians were top of the standings with 20 points from eight matches in the latest PSL standings, having won six games.

Their recent league run included a 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows and a 3-0 win against Siwelele. The victory over Siwelele was particularly impressive because it was Sundowns’ fifth consecutive victory across all competitions at the time.

Sundowns also produced a 5-2 victory over AmaZulu in August, with Brayan Léon scoring twice alongside goals from Teboho Mokoena, Tashreeq Matthews and Bennet Mokoena.

From a pure league-form perspective, Sundowns have a slight statistical advantage.

The Road to the Final Tells Another Story

The MTN8 campaign itself provides another way of comparing the teams.

Pirates defeated Durban City 2-1 after extra time in the quarter-finals before eliminating Sekhukhune United 4-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals. The Buccaneers won the first leg in Polokwane 1-0 before completing the job with a 3-0 victory at home.

Sundowns’ route was considerably more dramatic. They defeated Polokwane City after extra time in the quarter-finals before facing Golden Arrows in the semi-finals. Arrows stunned Sundowns with a 1-0 victory in the first leg, but the Brazilians responded with a 3-2 win in the second leg. The aggregate score finished 3-3, with Sundowns advancing on away goals.

That could prove significant psychologically. Pirates have experienced a relatively controlled journey to the final, while Sundowns have already had to survive adversity.

Attack Versus Control

One of the biggest questions heading into Saturday is which team’s attacking approach will prevail.

Sundowns have demonstrated their ability to score heavily. Their 5-2 league victory over AmaZulu showed how dangerous they can become when their attacking players find space and rhythm.

Pirates, meanwhile, have shown that they can combine attacking efficiency with defensive discipline. Their 4-0 victory over Kruger United and 4-0 aggregate victory over Sekhukhune demonstrated their ability to turn pressure into goals.

The final could therefore come down to which team manages the balance between attacking ambition and defensive security better.

Defensive Discipline Could Decide Everything

Cup finals are rarely won simply by attacking better. They are often won by making fewer decisive mistakes.

Pirates demonstrated defensive resilience during their MTN8 semi-final against Sekhukhune. After winning the first leg 1-0, they kept another clean sheet in the second leg and eventually won 3-0.

Sundowns also showed resilience during their semi-final. After falling behind against Golden Arrows in the first leg, they responded in the return fixture and eventually overturned the deficit.

Both teams therefore know how important defensive concentration will be. One lapse could decide the trophy.

Experience in Finals

There is little separating the clubs when it comes to experience at the highest level.

Pirates have been particularly dominant in the MTN8 in recent seasons, winning the competition four consecutive times and now attempting to become the first club to win it five years in succession.

Sundowns also have a long history of reaching MTN8 finals. They have won the competition four times, with their most recent triumph coming in 2021, but their overall final record has been less favourable.

They have lost seven of their previous MTN8 finals, including the 2023 final against Pirates.

That creates one of the clearest contrasts heading into Saturday: Pirates have developed a habit of winning MTN8 finals, while Sundowns have repeatedly reached the latter stages without always finishing the job.

The Psychological Battle

This could be the most fascinating part of the final.

Pirates can view Saturday as an opportunity to continue their MTN8 dynasty, while Sundowns can see it as a chance to end that run.

Pirates know they have beaten Sundowns in an MTN8 final before. Sundowns know they have beaten Pirates more recently in the league.

Neither side can therefore claim complete psychological superiority. The mental battle could ultimately depend on who handles the occasion better.

So, Who Has the Edge?

If the question is based on overall head-to-head history, Sundowns have the advantage. If it is based on recent league form, Sundowns also have a narrow statistical edge. If it is based on MTN8 history and recent success in the competition, Pirates have the stronger argument.

When it comes to final experience, both clubs have plenty, but Pirates’ recent record is particularly difficult to ignore.

And if the question is based on psychological momentum, the answer may depend on which part of the history you choose to remember. Sundowns can point to their recent league victories, while Pirates can point to the 2023 final.

That is what makes this contest so difficult to call.

One Trophy, Two Different Missions

For Pirates, Saturday represents a chance to make history. A fifth consecutive MTN8 title would extend their remarkable dominance of the competition.

For Sundowns, the mission is different. They want to reclaim a trophy that has remained out of their hands since 2021 and prevent Pirates from adding another chapter to their MTN8 dynasty.

Both teams have legitimate reasons to believe they can win. Both have demonstrated strong form, both have experienced the pressure of major finals and both have already shown that they can hurt the other.

The Final Verdict

On paper, Sundowns may enter Saturday with the narrowest statistical edge. They lead the broader head-to-head record, sit top of the current Betway Premiership standings and have won the most recent league meeting between the teams.

But football is rarely decided by statistics alone.

Pirates have something equally powerful: a proven MTN8 winning mentality. They have won the last four editions, already defeated Sundowns in a final at Moses Mabhida and reached this year’s final after a convincing semi-final campaign.

So perhaps the fairest conclusion is this: Sundowns may have the statistical edge. Pirates have the MTN8 edge.

On Saturday, neither will matter once the referee blows the first whistle. The answer will be decided on the pitch.

ONE STADIUM. TWO GIANTS. ONE TROPHY. 90 MINUTES TO GLORY.
