Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of adding another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet came to a disappointing end after they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Lamontville Golden Arrows in their MTN8 quarter-final clash at the FNB Stadium.
The Glamour Boys entered the encounter with confidence following a strong start to their league campaign, but Fernando Da Cruz’s side were punished for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal as Abafana Besthende delivered a disciplined away performance to book their place in the semi-finals.
Missed Opportunities Haunt Amakhosi
Kaizer Chiefs started the match on the front foot, dominating possession and creating promising openings in the final third. However, their inability to convert those chances would eventually prove decisive.
Luke Baartman came closest early on when he found himself in a one-on-one situation, but Golden Arrows goalkeeper Edward Maova produced a crucial save to deny the young attacker.
The hosts continued to pile on the pressure as the half progressed, with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo finding dangerous positions inside the penalty area. However, his finishing let him down as two close-range efforts sailed over the crossbar.
Despite their dominance, Chiefs went into the halftime break frustrated as the teams remained locked at 0-0.
Shezi’s Moment of Magic Stuns FNB Stadium
Golden Arrows produced the breakthrough shortly after the restart with a moment of brilliance from Khulekani Shezi.
Nine minutes into the second half, the midfielder delivered a deceptive cross-cum-shot from the right side that caught everyone by surprise. Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was unable to react in time as the ball found its way into the net, handing the visitors a shock 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute.
The goal forced Chiefs to increase their attacking intensity as they searched for a response. Da Cruz turned to his substitutes, introducing debutant Langelihle Phili and Etiosa Ighodaro in an attempt to unlock the stubborn Arrows defence.
Veteran midfielder Lebohang Maboe came close with a long-range effort, but Maova remained composed while the Golden Arrows defence stood firm to protect their lead.
Arrows Hold Firm to Reach Semi-Finals
Despite relentless late pressure from the Soweto giants, Golden Arrows showed tremendous resilience and game management to see out the victory.
Pitso Dladla’s side secured a memorable clean sheet away from home and advanced to the MTN8 semi-finals, while Chiefs were left to reflect on a night where missed chances ultimately cost them a place in the competition.
