Still Searching for a Spark: Why Marumo Gallants’ Winless Start Is Raising Early-Season Concerns

Betway Premiership

Marumo Gallants’ difficult beginning to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season continued after they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against provincial rivals Polokwane City at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Although Phuti Mohafe’s side showed tremendous character by fighting back twice from behind, the result extended their wait for a first league victory after five matches. With the early league standings beginning to take shape, pressure is mounting on Gallants to find consistency before their struggles turn into a serious relegation battle.

Defensive Issues Continue to Haunt Gallants

From the opening whistle, Gallants found themselves on the back foot as Polokwane City took advantage of defensive uncertainty. Tidimalo Molokwane gave Rise and Shine the lead in the early stages of the match, exposing weaknesses that have become a recurring concern for the home side.

Gallants responded quickly through Msindisi Ndlovu, whose composed finish restored hope and brought his team back into the contest. However, their defensive problems resurfaced when Lebohang Petrus Nkaki’s own goal handed Polokwane City another advantage.

The numbers paint a worrying picture for Mohafe’s team. After five matches, Gallants have conceded eight goals while finding the net only three times, highlighting the need for major improvements at both ends of the pitch. Defensive organisation and concentration will be key areas of focus as they look to turn their season around.

Fighting Spirit Offers a Glimmer of Hope

Despite another missed opportunity to claim maximum points, Gallants can take encouragement from their determination and refusal to give up.

After Bonginkosi Dlamini restored Polokwane City’s lead, Gallants responded with increased attacking pressure and tactical adjustments in search of an equaliser. Their persistence eventually paid off as they found the back of the net to secure a valuable point.

Substitute Katlego Otladisa nearly completed a dramatic comeback in stoppage time, coming close to scoring a late winner that would have transformed the mood around the club. While the finishing touch was missing, the performance showed that Gallants still possess the attacking energy and character needed to compete.

The challenge now is turning those positive moments into complete performances across 90 minutes.

Tough Road Ahead for Struggling Gallants

Sitting in 15th position, Gallants cannot afford to let their poor start continue for much longer. The fixtures ahead present an even greater test of their ability to survive early-season pressure.

Their next assignment will see them travel to face AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium before returning home for a highly anticipated clash against Orlando Pirates. Facing two established Premiership opponents in quick succession will demand discipline, defensive improvement, and greater efficiency in front of goal.

For Mohafe and his players, the message is clear: resilience alone will not be enough. Gallants must start converting fighting performances into victories if they want to climb away from danger and restore confidence among their supporters.

The season is still young, but the search for a winning formula has already become a priority.
