South Africa’s national women’s football team, Banyana Banyana, are preparing to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title at the much-anticipated 2024 edition, set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26.

South Africa come into the tournament as the defending champions, having made history by winning their first-ever WAFCON title in 2022, defeating hosts Morocco 2–1 in a dramatic final in Rabat. This year, they will return to Moroccan soil looking to repeat that success and solidify their dominance in African women’s football.

The 2024 edition of the tournament will see 12 nations compete across three groups. South Africa is placed in Group C, alongside Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania — a tough group that promises intense competition. Banyana Banyana will open their campaign on July 7 against Ghana in Casablanca.

Meanwhile, host nation Morocco will kick off the tournament on July 5 against Zambia in Rabat. All matches will be played across six stadiums in cities including Casablanca, Rabat, Oujda, Berkane, and Mohammédia.

With top African talents like Barbra Banda (Zambia), Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria), and Thembi Kgatlana (South Africa) set to feature, the 2024 WAFCON promises to be one of the most exciting editions yet. South Africa will rely heavily on their experienced core, including captain Janine van Wyk and midfield maestro Linda Motlhalo, as they aim for back-to-back continental glory.

This year’s tournament also comes with enhanced technology — VAR will be used across all matches, a continuation from its successful introduction in 2022.

South Africa’s road to the final won’t be easy, but with a strong squad, battle-tested coaching staff, and championship mentality, Banyana Banyana are ready to defend their crown on African soil.
