Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a statement performance at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, bouncing back from recent domestic frustrations with a sensational 5-2 victory over AmaZulu FC in a seven-goal spectacle that showcased the champions’ attacking firepower.
The Brazilians arrived with a point to prove and made their intentions clear from the opening whistle. New signing Brayan León announced himself in style, opening the scoring in the 25th minute with a composed finish before playing a central role in Sundowns’ relentless attacking display.
Just seven minutes later, midfield maestro Teboho Mokoena doubled the advantage with one of his trademark long-range efforts, sending the home crowd into celebration and giving Miguel Cardoso’s side a commanding start.
Usuthu’s Fightback Provides Brief Hope
AmaZulu, under the guidance of head coach Arthur Zwane, refused to surrender without a fight. The visitors came out firing after the break, with Ngwenya finding the back of the net just one minute into the second half to reduce the deficit and inject belief into the Usuthu camp.
However, Sundowns quickly regained control of the contest. Their quality, depth, and attacking intensity proved too much for AmaZulu to contain.
Tashreeq Matthews restored the two-goal cushion in the 51st minute, before León completed his brace in the 66th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Ngwenya added his second goal of the evening and fifth of the campaign to keep AmaZulu competitive, but the comeback was never truly on the cards.
Substitute Bennett Mokoena then put the finishing touch on a dominant display, scoring deep into stoppage time in the 90+3rd minute to seal a convincing 5-2 triumph for the home side.
