Thembinkosi Lorch delivered a standout performance for Wydad AC despite their 2–0 defeat to English champions Manchester City in the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.
Facing a strong City side, Lorch proved to be Wydad’s most influential player on the pitch. The South African midfielder tested goalkeeper Ederson early with an audacious long-range effort from his own half and later delivered a crucial through ball to Cassius Mailula, whose near finish was one of Wydad’s best chances of the match.
Lorch completed 19 of his 27 passes (70%), created two key chances, and had three shots on goal—one on target and two off. His overall contribution earned him a SofaScore rating of 7.8, the highest among Wydad players and second only to Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
Media across the continent also applauded Lorch’s performance. African football analysts described it as a “masterclass,” emphasizing how he held his own against one of the best teams in world football.
Although Manchester City secured victory through early goals by Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku, Lorch’s display was one of the few bright spots for Wydad. He remained on the pitch for 84 minutes before being substituted, having completed 40 touches, three successful dribbles, and won four out of five duels.
Wydad will now turn their focus to their next Club World Cup fixture against Juventus, scheduled for Sunday, June 22. Based on his performance, Lorch is expected to play a key role once again.
Despite the defeat, Lorch’s performance has bolstered his international profile and reaffirmed his value both for club and country.
