Kaizer Chiefs have officially kicked off their 2026/27 Betway Premiership preparations with the confirmation of their first major signing, landing experienced defender Thabo Moloisane on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old centre-back joins Kaizer Chiefs after the expiry of his contract with Stellenbosch FC, marking an early statement of intent from the Soweto giants as they begin shaping a new squad under incoming head coach Fernando da Cruz.
The move comes less than 24 hours after Chiefs confirmed the appointment of the French tactician, signalling the start of a busy rebuilding phase at Naturena.
Return to Gauteng
For Moloisane, this transfer represents more than just a new challenge. It is a return home.
Born in Meadowlands, Soweto, the defender comes back to Gauteng after three impressive seasons in the Western Cape, where he developed into one of the most reliable centre-backs in South African football.
His career pathway reflects steady progression. He came through the youth ranks at Mamelodi Sundowns, later captained Cape Town All Stars in the second tier, and also had a spell at Maritzburg United before earning his move to Stellenbosch FC in 2023.
At Stellenbosch, Moloisane’s consistency, leadership, and defensive maturity made him a standout performer in the Betway Premiership.
Impact at Stellenbosch FC
During his time with Stellenbosch FC, Moloisane established himself as a key figure at the heart of defence.
He made over 100 appearances across three seasons, becoming one of the club’s most dependable players in both domestic and continental competitions. His spell also included a Carling Black Label Cup triumph, adding silverware to his growing reputation.
On the international stage, his performances earned him senior recognition with Bafana Bafana, where he received two call-ups and made his debut against Mozambique.
He also played an important role in Stellenbosch FC’s memorable run to the semi-finals of the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup, gaining valuable experience against some of the continent’s strongest opposition.
Tactical Value for Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs finished the previous season in third place, securing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup and underlining steady progress under their current project.
Moloisane’s arrival is expected to strengthen a backline that is preparing for both domestic and continental demands.
Key strengths he brings include:
- Continental experience: His CAF Confederation Cup campaign with Stellenbosch FC gave him exposure to high-pressure African fixtures and travel demands.
- Defensive stability: Strong positioning, aerial dominance, and composure under pressure make him a reliable centre-back option.
- System flexibility: His tactical discipline allows him to fit into different defensive structures, which will be important under a new technical team.
His profile aligns with Chiefs’ need for stability, depth, and experience as they prepare for a demanding season ahead.
Pre-Season Integration Underway
The Kaizer Chiefs squad has already reported to Naturena to begin pre-season preparations, including baseline fitness testing and early training sessions.
Assistant coach Mahmoud Abbas is currently overseeing the initial phase of preparations while the club awaits the full arrival of Fernando da Cruz in July.
Moloisane is expected to integrate immediately into the squad and begin adapting to the club’s structure ahead of their pre-season camp, where the full tactical blueprint for the new season will take shape.
