In one of the most significant moments in recent South African football history, SuperSport United has been officially sold to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd, ending a proud 30-year legacy under the SuperSport and MultiChoice banner.
The deal was confirmed on 03 July 2025 by SuperSport International, following a closed and competitive bidding process. Siwelele F.C emerged as the successful bidder and is now poised to take ownership of the DStv Premiership side—pending the final approval of the PSL Executive Committee.
While the news has already sparked waves of excitement, especially among fans longing for the return of top-flight football to Bloemfontein, the transaction carries even greater significance. It marks the first time in decades that a team from the heart of the Free State could make a full return to the Premier Division, with many linking the name “Siwelele” to the spiritual revival of the beloved Bloemfontein Celtic brand.
SuperSport, meanwhile, has made it clear that the sale is part of a broader strategic shift. With the sports broadcasting landscape rapidly evolving, the company is sharpening its focus on innovation, digital content, and maintaining its leadership as Africa’s most trusted sports content powerhouse.
For Siwelele F.C, this acquisition presents both a challenge and an opportunity: to preserve a winning tradition established by SuperSport United while building a new identity rooted in passion, heritage, and community pride.
All eyes now turn to the PSL Executive Committee, whose decision will determine whether the club begins its new journey in the upcoming 2025/26 season. Until then, both SuperSport and Siwelele have agreed to respect the league’s processes and will not issue further public comments.
If approved, this move could redefine the shape of the league—reviving Free State football and ushering in a vibrant new chapter in the PSL’s story.
