Georgi Minoungou: The One-Eyed Ivorian Winger Breaking Barriers in World Football

Club World Cup

At just 22 years old, Georgi Minoungou is inspiring football fans across the globe—not just with his talent on the pitch, but with the incredible story behind his rise. Born on July 25, 2002, in Batiebly-Douibly, Côte d’Ivoire, Minoungou is proving that resilience, not circumstance, defines greatness.

Now playing for Seattle Sounders FC, the Ivorian winger recently made his international breakthrough at the FIFA Club World Cup. But behind the headlines is a detail that sets him apart from nearly every professional player at his level—Minoungou is blind in one eye.

The Life-Changing Setback

His journey took an unexpected turn in 2023 during a training camp in Spain, where he developed a serious eye infection. Despite surgery, he permanently lost vision in his left eye. For most, that would have meant the end of a dream. For Georgi Minoungou, it was a turning point.

“My left eye is not working… but I can do better than those who have two,” he told reporters—words that have become a symbol of his mindset.

From Côte d’Ivoire to the World Stage

Minoungou’s football journey began in West Africa before a move to Europe with Czech side MFK Vyškov. His explosive pace and natural flair caught attention, and in January 2023, he signed with Tacoma Defiance, Seattle Sounders’ reserve team.

He was promoted to the first team in August 2024 and quickly made an impact in Major League Soccer (MLS), scoring once and assisting another in 14 appearances. What’s remarkable is that all of this success has come while playing with monocular vision.

A Global Spotlight at the Club World Cup

In June 2025, Minoungou featured for Seattle in their Club World Cup fixture against Atlético Madrid. His confident play, dribbling skills, and attacking presence stood out as he proved once again that he can compete on football’s biggest stages.

Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer and teammates continue to praise his work ethic and determination, calling him one of the most mentally strong players in the squad.

A Story of Resilience

Georgi Minoungou’s story is more than just a football journey—it’s about overcoming the odds and redefining what is possible. At just 22 years old, he stands as a symbol of strength, belief, and never giving up.
