Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his dramatic departure from the Portugal national team camp, offering his detailed account of the disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus and insisting that he remains committed to representing his country.
The Portugal captain released a lengthy statement on Tuesday, 6 October, explaining the events that led to his departure from the national team camp ahead of the match against Denmark.
Ronaldo’s statement comes after days of speculation surrounding his relationship with Jesus and the circumstances behind his decision to leave the squad. According to Ronaldo, the dispute was not simply about playing time. Instead, he says it centred on an agreement he had reached with the Portugal coach and what he regarded as two separate breaches of trust.
The forward also accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to Portugal’s supporters and his international teammates.
Ronaldo says he had considered ending his Portugal career
Ronaldo revealed that he had already prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese public following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 41-year-old explained that he had been preparing to bring his international career to an end after the tournament, but that the Portuguese Football Federation subsequently asked him to reconsider. He says the federation’s president personally urged him to remain with the national team.
Ronaldo also revealed that he was consulted about the appointment of Jorge Jesus as Portugal’s new head coach. According to the Portugal captain, he supported the decision and believed Jesus was the right person for the position.
That made the events that followed particularly difficult for Ronaldo because, by his account, he entered the new national-team era believing that he and Jesus had established a relationship based on trust.
Ronaldo says Jesus told him he was important to the project
Ronaldo says his first meeting with Jesus took place at Cidade do Futebol after the coach contacted him during his holiday.
During that meeting, Ronaldo says Jesus told him that he was counting on him and that his presence was an important part of the coach’s plans. The two reportedly discussed how Ronaldo would be managed during the international window.
According to Ronaldo, the original plan was for him to play the opening match and the final match of the international period, with his workload carefully managed because of his physical condition.
Jesus also allegedly suggested that Ronaldo could remain in Portugal rather than travel for the away matches in Norway and Denmark. Ronaldo says he rejected that proposal because he did not believe it would set the right example for the national team captain.
He subsequently travelled with the squad.
What happened during the Norway match?
The dispute intensified around Portugal’s match in Norway.
Ronaldo says that, before the game, he was focused on his recovery and understood that he was not expected to play. However, he says an assistant coach approached him during lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to speak to him.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus then asked whether he was capable of playing approximately 30 minutes. Ronaldo says he agreed.
He subsequently began warming up during the match, expecting to be introduced. However, he was never sent onto the pitch.
That became the first major point of contention.
Ronaldo described the situation bluntly, saying: “The coach had broken his word to me.”
He says his frustration was not simply about being left on the bench. Rather, it was because the playing plan he believed had been agreed beforehand had changed.
Ronaldo apologises for not greeting the supporters
Following the match, Ronaldo says he wanted to be alone and did not go over to acknowledge the Portugal supporters.
He accepts full responsibility for that decision.
The veteran forward apologised to Portuguese supporters who had travelled to support the national team, as well as other fans who may have travelled specifically to see him. Ronaldo made it clear that he understands the importance of his relationship with Portugal supporters and believes his reaction should not have happened.
His admission is significant because it shows that, despite his criticism of Jesus, Ronaldo is not attempting to place responsibility for every aspect of the incident on the coach.
The meeting that followed
Ronaldo says that approximately 48 hours later he met with Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho.
According to Ronaldo, the meeting was intended to resolve the dispute privately. He says the three men discussed what had happened and agreed on a way to clarify the situation publicly.
Ronaldo claims Jesus agreed to explain during his next press conference that Ronaldo had not demanded playing time and that the original plan had come from the coach.
He also says the coach was expected to acknowledge that asking Ronaldo to warm up and subsequently not introducing him had been a mistake.
Ronaldo says an eight-point document reflecting the agreed position was subsequently prepared and validated.
Among the points described in Ronaldo’s statement were that he had accepted Jesus’ plan, had not challenged the coach’s decisions and had remained professional throughout the situation.
Ronaldo says Jesus was also expected to make clear that he wanted the forward to remain part of the Portugal national team.
Ronaldo says the public comments were different
This is where Ronaldo says the relationship broke down further.
According to the Portugal captain, Jesus’ subsequent public comments did not reflect what had been agreed during their private meeting.
Ronaldo regarded this as a second breach of trust.
He says he had reached the point where he no longer believed remaining inside the camp would benefit the team. As a result, he decided to leave.
Reuters reported that Jesus has disputed Ronaldo’s account of the agreement, while the Portuguese Football Federation had not immediately commented on Ronaldo’s statement.
That distinction is important because Ronaldo’s statement represents his account of the events, rather than an independently established account of every disputed conversation.
Ronaldo accepts that leaving camp was wrong
One of the strongest parts of Ronaldo’s statement was his acceptance of responsibility.
Despite maintaining that he felt his trust had been broken, Ronaldo admitted that he should not have left the national team camp. He apologised directly to his teammates and said his position as captain makes the incident more serious.
Ronaldo also said he accepts that the Portuguese Football Federation should determine the consequences of his actions.
He went further by saying that he does not believe his status as one of football’s biggest stars should protect him from punishment.
For Ronaldo, the rules must apply equally to everyone.
Ronaldo rejects the idea that he only wants a farewell
Another major message from the statement was Ronaldo’s rejection of the idea that his remaining international appearances should simply become a farewell tour.
He acknowledged that he has heard discussions about giving him a dignified farewell before he eventually ends his Portugal career. However, Ronaldo stressed that when he thinks about playing for Portugal, his priority is competition.
He wants to play, compete and win.
He also referred to the difficult moment when he learned of his father’s death while he was with the national team. Ronaldo recalled choosing to remain with Portugal until after the following match, presenting it as an example of how deeply he values representing his country.
Ronaldo remains available for Portugal
Despite the dispute with Jesus, Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football.
Instead, he says that if he remains physically fit, continues playing regularly for his club and serves whatever suspension may be imposed following his departure from camp, he will remain available for Portugal.
His message was therefore not one of farewell.
It was a declaration that he still wants to compete for his country.
That leaves Portugal with an important situation to resolve as the relationship between its captain and head coach remains under intense scrutiny.
A dispute bigger than playing time
Ronaldo’s statement provides a much broader picture of the disagreement than the initial reports surrounding his departure.
From his perspective, the central issue was trust.
He says he accepted Jesus’ original plans, respected the coach’s authority and did not demand a particular amount of playing time. His frustration began when the plan changed before the Norway match and intensified after what he describes as a failed agreement to explain the situation publicly.
Jesus, however, has disputed Ronaldo’s version of the alleged agreement, meaning that the disagreement remains contested.
For Portugal, the issue now goes beyond one player missing one match.
Ronaldo is the country’s captain and record goalscorer, while Jesus is the coach tasked with leading the national team. The Portuguese Football Federation will therefore face difficult decisions about how to manage the situation while protecting the team’s preparations and competitive ambitions.
Ronaldo’s message to Portugal
Despite everything that has happened, Ronaldo’s closing message was one of commitment rather than separation.
He made it clear that he still wants to wear the Portugal shirt and compete for the national team. His statement also contained repeated apologies to supporters and teammates, alongside an acceptance that his decision to leave camp must have consequences.
For a player whose international career has already entered its final chapter, the controversy could have marked the beginning of the end.
Instead, Ronaldo has made his position clear.
He does not believe his Portugal story is finished.
If he is fit, playing for his club and available after any disciplinary punishment, Ronaldo says he will be ready to return and compete for Portugal once again.
“This is, believe me, the purest of truths,” Ronaldo said in the closing words of his statement.
The coming days will determine whether that commitment leads to another chapter with Portugal or whether the dispute with Jesus creates a deeper divide within the national team.
For now, Ronaldo has put his version of events on the public record.
And his message is unmistakable: he still wants to play for Portugal.
