Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire FC have officially announced the signing of highly rated South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi from Orlando Pirates. The 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract that runs until 2029, with the option of an additional year.
Mbokazi joins the MLS outfit as part of the league’s U22 initiative and will occupy an international roster spot. Although financial details were not revealed, the move is regarded as a significant investment in a player who has been widely praised as one of the brightest young defenders to come out of South Africa in recent years.
Chicago Fire head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter expressed his admiration for the young centre-back, highlighting his strong mentality and leadership qualities despite his age. According to the club, Mbokazi’s performances both domestically and internationally showed maturity, composure, and the potential to grow into a top-level defender in the MLS.
The Hluhluwe-born youngster enjoyed a steady rise at Orlando Pirates, featuring in league matches, cup competitions, and continental football. He was part of the squad that recently lifted the MTN8 title and earned praise for his consistent displays at the heart of the defence. Mbokazi has also represented South Africa at junior levels and made his senior national team debut earlier this year, further cementing his status as a promising talent.
For Chicago Fire, the signing marks another step towards strengthening their defensive unit with youthful, long-term options. Mbokazi’s arrival is expected to add depth, physicality, and versatility to the squad as the club continues to build for the future.
For the player himself, the move presents a major opportunity to test himself in a new environment, compete at a high level, and develop under experienced coaching. The transition to MLS is also seen as a potential pathway toward European football, should his growth continue on its current trajectory.
Mbokazi will join his new teammates ahead of the upcoming season as Chicago Fire look to stabilise their defence and push for improved performances in the league.
