For Kruger United, the result served as a reminder of the challenges that come with competing among South Africa’s elite.
Early Blow Sets the Tone
Orlando Pirates wasted little time asserting their dominance, with the visitors taking the lead just four minutes into the contest.
A defensive error from Kruger United presented the Buccaneers with an early opportunity inside the box, resulting in a penalty. Gamphani Lungu showed composure under pressure, calmly converting from the spot to give Pirates a 1-0 advantage.
The early setback forced Kruger United into a defensive approach as they attempted to contain the Soweto giants. The hosts worked tirelessly to close down spaces and frustrate Pirates’ attacking rhythm, but the visitors’ quality in possession and movement continued to create problems.
Radiopane Extends the Lead
Kruger United entered the second half hoping to mount a response, but Orlando Pirates quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback.
In the 54th minute, Boitumelo Radiopane doubled the Buccaneers’ advantage after benefiting from a well-worked attacking move. The forward showed excellent composure inside the penalty area, finishing clinically to make it 2-0.
With the game increasingly opening up, Pirates began to exploit the spaces left by a tiring Kruger United defence. The visitors’ technical team made effective use of their bench, introducing fresh attacking energy to maintain their dominance.
Mbuthuma Seals the Rout
Substitute Yanela Mbuthuma made an immediate impact, delivering a brilliant late cameo that put the result beyond doubt.
The striker announced his arrival with a composed finish in the 78th minute, finding space inside the box before calmly beating the goalkeeper to extend Pirates’ lead to 3-0.
Mbuthuma was not finished. In stoppage time, the forward struck again, completing his brace in the 90th minute plus added time and sealing a memorable 4-0 victory for the Buccaneers.
