Benfica delivered a commanding performance in their second group match at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, thrashing New Zealand champions Auckland City 6–0 at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

First Half: Di María Opens the Scoring

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Benfica only managed to break the deadlock late in the first half. Ángel Di María calmly slotted home a penalty in the 45+8th minute after persistent pressure finally forced an error from the Auckland defense. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow was outstanding in the first period, making over ten saves to keep his side in the game.

Second Half Delayed by Weather

A severe thunderstorm and lightning led to an extended halftime delay of more than two hours, disrupting the rhythm of the match. Once play resumed, Benfica wasted no time in asserting their superiority.

Second Half Goal Rush

Benfica came out firing in the second half, quickly extending their lead through Evangelos Pavlidis in the 53rd minute. Renato Sanches made it 3–0 in the 63rd minute with a well-placed finish.

The floodgates opened late in the half as Leandro Barreiro scored twice in quick succession, netting in the 76th and 78th minutes. Di María added his second of the night with another penalty in stoppage time to cap off the emphatic victory.
