South Africa’s U-20 men’s national team, Amajita, strengthened their position in Group B of the 2026 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations COSAFA Qualifiers with an impressive 2-0 victory over Angola at ABB 1 Stadium in Matola on Monday afternoon.
Following their opening-match victory, Raymond Mdaka’s charges produced another disciplined performance to overcome an Angola side regarded as one of the stronger contenders in the group.
Maku and Mendes Lead Amajita to Victory
The opening stages were closely contested, with both teams battling for control in midfield and creating limited clear-cut opportunities.
South Africa eventually broke the deadlock through captain Lazola Maku, who delivered a composed finish to put Amajita in front.
The goal forced Angola to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser, creating spaces for South Africa to exploit on the counter.
Amajita took advantage of the openings when Steven Mendes found the back of the net to double their advantage.
Mendes, who also impressed in South Africa’s opening victory over Lesotho, continued his strong start to the tournament as Amajita maintained their control and secured another clean sheet.
Captain Maku Named Player of the Match
Captain Lazola Maku was rewarded for his influential performance by being named Player of the Match.
The midfielder played a key role in South Africa’s control of the game, combining his work rate with intelligent distribution while also contributing an important goal.
His leadership proved valuable as Amajita dealt with Angola’s physical approach and maintained their composure throughout the encounter.
Amajita Strengthen Their Position in Group B
The victory means Amajita have now recorded two wins from two matches, putting them in a strong position as the Group B campaign reaches its decisive stages.
Mdaka’s side will now turn their attention to their remaining group fixtures as they continue their pursuit of qualification and look to defend their regional title.
With momentum on their side, Amajita will be determined to maintain their unbeaten start and secure their place in the next stage of the competition.
